Mustangs Second Half Surge Not Enough in MAC Commonwealth Championship

YORK, Pa.- Stevenson men's lacrosse was off to a slow start on a rainy Saturday night in the MAC Commonwealth final against York (Pa.). The Mustangs gained momentum in the third tallying seven goals on nine shots to cut the Spartans lead but ultimately fell short, 15-13. 

Stevenson struck first in the MAC Commonwealth Championship game against York (Pa.) as Mitchell Lachman tossed in an unassisted goal from the left side. Less than a minute later the Spartans answered as they tallied their first goal at the 10:17 minute mark. No sooner did Shane Ford record his first goal of the game following a ground ball pickup. York once again reacted quick to tie up the game 2-2. The Spartans finished up the first quarter with another goal taking a, 3-2 lead. 

York began to pull away from Stevenson with two more goals to start the second quarter. At the 9:45 minute mark, Shane Ford assisted Lucas Ingley with a slick goal around the crease. Before the end of the second quarter the Spartans tacked on two more goals to take a substantial, 7-2 lead. 

On nine shots in the third period the Mustangs recorded seven goals to chip away at York's lead while allowing just four goals for the Spartans. The Mustangs attacked first after the break as Jack Scaliti tallied his 20th goal of the season. Stevenson added another goal three minutes later as they continued to close the gap on York. Five minutes into the third quarter, the Spartans recorded their first goal of the half before the Mustangs added another goal a minute later as Scaliti assisted Ford. In a continued back and forth fashion throughout the quarter, Nolan Enneguess ran down the middle to cut the Spartans lead to three with five minutes remaining in the quarter. Cam Leydig closed out the quarter with just six seconds remaining to come within one at 10-11 against the Spartans. 

The Mustangs were in full force starting off the fourth quarter on a five-goal surge to take over the lead, 12-11, five minutes into the final frame. With just five minutes remaining, the Spartans fired off three unanswered goals with just three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, to retake the lead. At the 1:48 minute mark, Josh Brannan scored the Mustangs final goal of the game. With 45 seconds remaining, Ed Masterson caused a York turnover, but the Mustangs quickly turned it back over. With just 16 seconds remaining the Spartans added the final goal of the game to seal their win. Following a face-off win, the Mustangs gave one last stich effort to add another, but the shot was saved. 

News and Notes: 

  • Today marked the second consecutive meeting between the Mustangs and the Spartans in the conference title game
  • Enneguess moves up to sixth all-time in Stevenson single season ground balls with 137.
  • With two goals this evening, Brannan moves into third all-time in single season goals with 66. 
  • Poust recorded 14 saves in the net. 
  • Ford led the way with four goals and one assist, Lachman added two goals and one assist.
  • Brannan and Leydig each added a pair of goals while Ingley, Scaliti, and Ennguess each recorded one.
