Kozlowski Sets Career Draw Control Record in Blowout of Hood

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Stevenson women's lacrosse rolled to a 25-7 victory against Hood on Wednesday night at Mustang Stadium. Kaitlyn Kozlowski collected 11 draw controls, setting a new program record with 176 for her career. 

Stevenson (7-4, 2-0) posted its fifth consecutive victory, pulling ahead comfortably to start the running clock in the third quarter. The Mustangs led 8-3 after the opening quarter, stretching the advantage to 15-6 at the half. 

In addition to her big day at the draw, Kozlowski recorded five goals, an assist and three ground balls. Mary Marc added five goals for the Mustangs, one of nine different goal scorers on the night.

Caroline Murphy tied for a team-best six points on the night with four goals and two assists for the Mustangs. Stevenson owned possession for much of the opening quarter and converted its chances at a high rate. 

Hood (4-7, 0-3) attempted to battle back most of the night with seven different players finding the back of the net. Liz Connelly and Mackenzi Wright scored consecutive goals near the end of the opening quarter before the Mustangs responded with the next four markers. 

Marc opened the scoring with a pair of goals, the second coming on a free-position opportunity. From there, the Mustangs rattled off a five-goal spurt for a 7-1 lead. McKenna Blick started the run, burying a pass from Kara Yarusso before Caroline Murphy ripped a chance at the doorstep at 7:52 for a 4-1 advantage. 

Yarusso, Blick and Kozlowski stretched the Stevenson lead to 7-1 with 5:18 left in the frame. Hood responded with consecutive markers with the first quarter winding down, trimming the deficit to 7-3. 

Kozlowski raced in from the left side and scored with 6.3 seconds remaining in the first, pushing the Mustangs to an 8-3 advantage. 

Blick netted her third of the game and 33rd of the season with just under one minute elapsed in the second period. Kozlowski ripped home her third of the night shortly after on the free-position at 12:14 as Stevenson expanded its lead to 10-3. 

Murphy moved into sole possession of eighth on the Stevenson all-time points list and netted her second of the night with a turning tally. The Mustangs continued using a strong night at the draw to their advantage, pushing its lead to 14-6 in the second as Kozlowski raced in for a free-position goal. 

Stevenson used an 8-0 surge in the third quarter and outscored the Blazers by a 2-1 margin during the final frame, working in a good chunk of the lineup. 

Sophie Shucosky made three saves in just under 40 minutes, giving way to Caitlyn Lane over the final 20 minutes of the contest. 

NEWS AND NOTES 

  • Kozlowski sets the new program record for draw controls with 176 after grabbing 11 on the night. It marks her third game with 10 or more draw controls this season, following a single-game school record last time out against the Golden Wolves. 
  • Kozlowski began the night tied for third all-time in career draw controls, passing Lauren Zegowitz (168) and Mandi Carr (175) to move atop the program record book. 
  • Murphy moved to eighth on the Stevenson all-time points list, increasing her total to 181. She is now just five shy of tying Heather Valunas for seventh place. 
  • Murphy moved into a tie for eighth on the Stevenson all-time career goals list, increasing her total to 137 with four goals tonight, tying Megan Weiss. 
  • Stevenson has notched at least five caused turnovers in six consecutive games. Seven different players recorded a caused turnover tonight for the Mustangs, including two each from Annee Kopecky and Erin Olenchalk
  • Stevenson held a 42-17 edge in shots on the night. 
  • Maddie Zeller scored for the second consecutive contest with her marker with 24 seconds left in the third. 
  • Stevenson increases its all-time series lead to 22-0 against Hood. 
  • The Blazers were without leading scorer Laura Skorobatsch for a second consecutive game.
