Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- In a contest that featured a postseason intensity, 13th-ranked Stevenson closed out the regular season with a 19-12 Senior Night victory against Widener on Saturday at Mustang Stadium.
Stevenson (12-5, 7-1) finishes the regular season at the two seed in the upcoming Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth Tournament. The team recognized 14 seniors in a pregame cermony prior to the start of the contest.
The Mustangs will host Eastern on Thursday, May 5 for a 7:00 p.m. MAC Commonwealth Semifinal clash at Mustang Stadium.
Meanwhile, Widener (7-8, 5-3) finishes as the four seed, next in action in the MAC Commonwealth Play-In Game on Monday, May 3 against Messiah. A physical affair throughout, neither side could gain much separation over the first half. Eventually, the Mustangs used a second-half push after overcoming some sloppy play with six unanswered goals to pull in front for good. Josh Brannan and Mitchell Lachman posted five goals each to pace the Mustangs offensively, two of seven players with multiple points for the hosts.
Connor Heisman rifled four goals with an assist in leading Widener. The Pride received a timely goal out of a timeout with time ticking away in the opening half, coming from Zach Politarhos and trimming the deficit to 8-6 at the intermission. Widener leveled the score at three following the opening stanza, but could not pull back to even despite scoring flurries at the end of the second and fourth quarters.
Marc Poust snagged 14 saves before giving way to Paul DiFluri, who secured a pair of stops much to the delight of the energized Mustang Stadium crowd. Nicholas Mulvey netted his first collegiate goal in the opening quarter to get the Mustangs on the board, adding two caused turnovers and four ground balls.
The Pride rounded out the opening quarter with consecutive tallies and brought the score even at three. Mulvey, Griffin Gast and Cam Leydig scored for the Mustangs, who were limited in possession at the start of the contest. In the second, the Mustangs recorded five straight goals before the Pride responded with three in a row as part of a streaky quarter. Shane Ford began the scoring in the second, before Brannan and Lachman cashed in twice. Lachman's goals came off assists from Damien Schmidt and Ryan Coleman, with the second one off an extra-man opportunity.
Widener whittled the deficit to 8-6 at halftime before the Mustangs powered their way to a victory in the second half. Coleman, Brannan, Gast and Lachman were all part of the scoring surge for the Mustangs in the third, building a 14-6 edge with 7:12 showing in the third. The Mustangs held pace with Widener in the fourth despite one final push from the vistors.
