Mustangs Hold on as Haines Homers in Game One but Falls in Game Two to York (Pa.)

YORK, Pa.- The Stevenson University softball team split with York (Pa.) on a windy afternoon doubleheader. The Mustangs held on in game one winning, 7-6 but fell short in game two, 13-5 (5 innings). 

The Stevenson softball team started off very strong in game one against York (Pa.). The Mustangs to a 3-1 lead after the first inning. Maddie Bosley started the hitting with a double down the left field line. Jordan Fangman singled to left field to advance Bosley. Megan Hamp hit an RBI single to right field to score Bosley. On two wild pitches, Hamp and Fangman advanced which brought in a run. Hamp then scored on a passed ball to take a 3-0 lead. York hit an RBI single to right field to cut Stevenson's lead. 

While the second inning was scoreless for both, the Mustangs got back in it in the third as Jillian Haines hit a three-run homer to center field.  In the fourth, Stevenson added another run on an error with the bases loaded. After four innings, the Mustangs took a big 7-1 lead over the Spartans. 

York got back in the game in the sixth with two home runs to bring the score to 7-6, Stevenson. In the top of the seventh, the Mustangs went three and out to give York a chance to walk away with the win. In the bottom of the seventh, the Spartans were able to reach first and second before Marissa Heuer struck out the final two batters to end the game. 

Game 1 Notes: 

  • Haines went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, one run scored, and one homerun. 
  • Heuer recorded six strikeouts in the win over York and improves to 10-4 in the circle. 
  • Bosley went 1 for 3 with two runs scored and a double. 
  • Hamp went 1 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI. 

Game two started out differently for both teams as York dominated in the bottom of the first putting up six runs. In the top of the first, the Mustangs picked up one run on a sacrifice fly to right field. The Spartans added another run in the third on an RBI single to center field. 

York kept up their momentum in the fourth as they tacked on four more runs to take a 10-1 lead.  Stevenson picked it up a bit as they scored four more runs on the top of the fifth, but it wasn't enough for the Mustangs with the Spartans six run first inning. In the fifth, Bosley double to left center to score two. Fangman then singled up the middle to score Bosley. Finally, Hamp singled up the middle for an RBI. York closed out the five-inning game with two more run in the bottom of the fifth. 

Game 2 Notes: 

  • Bosley went 2 for 3 with two runs scored, two RBIs, and a double. 
  • Fangman went 2 for 3 with one run scored, one RBI, and one double. 
  • Stevenson remains in fifth in the MAC Commonwealth while York (Pa.) is in third. 

The Mustangs will travel to McDaniel tomorrow, April 28th for a rescheduled non-conference doubleheader starting at 3:00 PM.
