Box Score 2 OWINGS MILLS, Md.- The Stevenson softball team got off to a hot start as they swept Susquehanna, 5-2, 9-7 in their season opener. Although the Mustang's start to both games was slow they come back for two wins.
In game one against Susquehanna, the Riverhawks scored two runs in the first but were unable to score again in the game. The Mustangs got on the board in the bottom of the third. Rebecca Henry started off the inning with a double to left field and then after a sacrifice bunt, Henry advanced to third. Jordan Fangman singled to left field to move Henry across home plate.
The Mustangs tied things up in the bottom of the fourth as Kat Perea got things going with a home run to center field. Stevenson really got it going in the fifth as they scored three runs. McKenzie Tobler started off the fifth with a single to left-center. Megan Hamp doubled down the left-field line to advance Tobler to third. After Perea was walked, Marissa Heuer singled to second to advance Perea and Hamp and bring Tobler home. Sierra Stark then singled to the pitcher. Heuer advanced to second on an error by the pitcher and Perea and Hamp scored.
The final two innings were scoreless for both teams. Fangman went 1-4 with an RBI. Perea went 1-2 with two runs, an RBI, and a home run. Heuer pitched all seven innings and totaled seven strikeouts.
In game two against the Riverhawks, the Mustangs came back with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to win, 9-7. Susquehanna took a 3-0 lead after the second inning. In the bottom of the third, Stevenson scored as Jillian Haines hit a home run to left-center. The Riverhawks added three more runs in the fifth to lead, 6-1.
At the bottom of the fifth, the Mustangs were on a roll scoring seven runs. Madison Buher started off the inning with a single to left field. Henry singled through the left side to advance Buher. After a foul out to first, Henry and Buher advanced. Fangman then doubled and advanced to third on an error by the centerfielder. Henry and Buher scored on Fangman's at-bat. Maddie Bosley hit a home run to bring in Fangman and then Hamp hit a home run as well. Next at-bat, Perea singled to right field and Sierra Stark singled while Perea advanced on an error by the second basewoman. Lauren Riesberg doubled to left-center to bring home Perea. Henry then singled to the left-center to bring home Stark.
Susquehanna scored another run in the top of the sixth before the Mustangs scored their final run in the bottom of the sixth. Hamp hit her second home run of the game to left-center.
Fangman went 1-4 with two RBI, a double, and one run scored. Hamp went 3-4 with two RBI, two runs scored, and two home runs. Bosley went 2-4 with two RBI, one run scored, and a home run. Haines went 1-1 with an RBI, one run scored, and a home run.
Stevenson will be back in action, on March 12 as they face St. Joseph (Conn.) at 9:30 am in Myrtle Beach, SC as they start off spring break.
