Mustangs Split with No. 6 Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va.- The Stevenson softball team split with No. 6 Randolph-Macon on the road, Wednesday afternoon. The Mustangs fell, 2-1 in nine innings and then defeated the Yellow Jackets, 8-7. 

In game one, the Mustangs and Yellow-Jackets were scoreless through a regulation seven innings. In the first seven innings there were a total of just six hits between the two teams. In the top of the eighth Stevenson scored their lone run of the game. To start off the eighth Jordan Fangman was placed on second base to start. After a sacrifice, Fangman advanced to third and then on Megan Hamp's RBI single, Fangman ran across home plate. 

In the bottom of the eighth, Randolph-Macon added a run to tie up the game bringing it to the ninth inning. In the bottom of the ninth, RMC singled through the right side bringing in their second run to take the 2-1 win. 

Game 1 Notes

  • Marissa Heuer pitched all eight innings totaling eight strikeouts while allowing four hits. 
  • Fangman went 1 for 4 with one run scored. 
  • Hamp went 1 for 4 with an RBI. 

Game two saw things more exciting for both teams. Randolph-Macon got on the board first as they went up 4-0 after scoring two runs in the first and two in the second. The Yellow Jackets extended their lead, 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth. 

In the top of the fifth, Stevenson put two on the board after Fangman hit a two-run home run to left center. RMC added two more in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-2 lead. In the sixth and seventh innings the Mustangs got to work. Jillian Haines doubled to right center then advanced on a wild pitch. Rebecca Henry singled up the middle to bring home Haines. Mckenzie Tobler singled through the right side to score Henry. Fangman then hit an RBI single to left field to bring in Elizabeth Russo. After the sixth the Mustangs cut the Yellow Jackets lead to 7-5. 

Stevenson tacked on three more runs in the seventh to secure their, 8-7 win. A ground out to second brought in Kat Perea. Finally, a single to right field brought in Lauren Riesberg and Henry. 

Game 2 Notes: 

  • Fangman went 2 for 5 with one run scored, three RBI, and a homerun. 
  • Haines went 2 for 4 with one run scored, and a double. 
  • Henry went 2 for 3 with one RBI, and two runs scored. 

Stevenson returns to MAC Commonwealth play this Saturday, April 2 at 1 PM for a doubleheader.
