Mustangs Motor Past No. 5 Southern Virginia, Lancaster Bible

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson men's volleyball team defeated No. 5 Southern Virginia and Lancaster Bible each 3-0 at Owings Mills Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

 

  • Set scores were 22-25, 18-25 and 20-25
  • Stevenson and Southern Va. traded points before kills from Aleks Melbardis and Tanner Stauffer gave the Mustangs an advantage at 7-11 in the first set.
  • Stevenson leveraged a 22-20 lead with a kill from Tim Flanagan.
  • Aiden O'Brien gave Stevenson the first set victory with a kill assisted by Justin Novoa.
  • In set two, the Mustangs jumped to a 7-12 lead on a Flanagan block.
  • Stevenson stretched to a 14-22 lead on a block by Elliot De La Torre and Melbardis.
  • Stevenson won the set on a service error.
  • In set three, a four-point Stevenson run set the difference early on with back-to-back kills from Stauffer at the 7-9 mark.
  • The Mustangs never looked back gaining an 18-22 lead with a Melbardis kill. 
  • O'Brien picked up the final kill to give the straight set sweep to the Mustangs.

  • Set scores were 12-25, 18-25 and 18-15.
  • After dropping the first point of set one, the Mustangs rattled off seven straight points to gain a large advantage.
  • Back-to-back kills from Aleks Melbardis set the pace at 3-11.
  • Tyler Aiello picked up a kill to stretch the first set margin to 9-19.
  • Stevenson took the final four points of set one to win the frame.
  • Stevenson and LBC traded points throughout the beginning of set two until Elliot De La Torre and Tim Flanagan picked up kills to set a 10-13 pace.
  • Stevenson widened its set two advantage to 14-23 on a six-point run with Stauffer picking up two aces along the way.
  • O'Brien sealed the second set for Stevenson with another kill.
  • Set three was tightly contested until the Mustangs gained an 11-14 advantage following a four-point run.
  • Stevenson rattled off another six-point run to widen a 12-21 lead on the heels of two aces from Melbardis.
  • Stevenson never looked back, taking the final frame 18-25.

  • No. 5 Southern Virginia is the second AVCA Top-15 team Stevenson has defeated this season (#8 SUNY New Paltz, January 14).
  • Justin Novoa tied a season and career-high 33 assists (vs. Mount Union, January 22).
  • Aleks Melbardis added four aces vs Lancaster Bible.

 

  • The Mustangs next match will be at 12pm on Saturday, February 12 at Randolph-Macon before returning home for their next three matches.
