Mustangs Capitalize in Overtime for Thrilling 5-4 Road Win at Neumann

Box Score

ASTON, Pa. -- Stevenson men's hockey won its second consecutive contest in overtime, knocking off Neumann in a back-and-forth 5-4 road victory in UCHC play on Friday night.

Stevenson (12-5-1, 8-3) had to battle back to tie the game in the third and received two goals from Chad Watt, including the game-winner in overtime. The Mustangs have now won eight games in a row against Neumann (7-12-1, 4-9-1), getting points from eight different skaters on Friday.

Meanwhile, Neumann battled back from a pair of two-goal deficits to take the lead in the third period.

  • Ryan Kenny was forced to make consecutive saves on the first Neumann shift of the night. Moments later, Stevenson capitalized off a rebound chance in front as Kyle Lightfoot gave the Mustangs an early 1-0 lead just over two minutes into the period.
  • After keeping the puck in the offensive zone, Eric Olson glided into the slot and rang a chance off the post that created a hectic scramble in front. Kenny was tested with a deflected chance from the point on a Neumann power play, but the junior stayed square to the puck and made the stop.
  • Off a turnover, Malcolm Palmer ripped a shot alone in the slot and the Mustangs followed up with another chance through traffic, both stopped by Neumann goalie Cal Ambrose.
  • With just over three minutes remaining in the period, Blake Colman delivered a well-placed slap-pass onto the waiting stick of Watt in the slot, who deflected the puck past Ambrose to double the Stevenson advantage at 2-0.
  • Neumann held the edge in shots in the period, eventually trimming the lead to one goal at 18:46 as Pasquale Demitrio found the back of the net. Brendan Rylott countered back with a breakaway chance near the end of the period as Ambrose got a pad on the puck as the score stayed at 2-1 in favor of the Mustangs after the opening period.

  • Liam McCanney poked the puck away from a Neumann player at the blue line and raced ahead to tuck the puck behind Ambrose on a breakaway marker, expanding the lead to 3-1 just 2:39 into the stanza.
  • Neumann trimmed its deficit to one once again as Joe DiGiulio posted his fifth goal of the season at 13:50. Kenny made a quick save on the ensuing faceoff, turning aside a chance from Richie Brusco before Watt stepped in front of a Knight attempt.
  • The Knights continued the pressure with a quick flurry of chances looking to build off their earlier goal. While Stevenson remained hemmed in their own zone, the Mustangs used a timeout after an icing with just under 40 seconds left in the stanza.
  • Neumann leveled the score at three after taking a bouncing puck into the offensive zone off the rush and scoring at 19:56.

  • The Knights kept rolling at the onset of the third, taking a 4-3 lead after a goal from Evan Hoey just 36 seconds in. Stevenson needed to turn to its penalty kill once again after being whistled for too many men on the ice, folding Neumann at bay with just around 15 minutes left in the period.
  • Mac Lowry came off the bench and fired a chance high glove side from the left-wing boards, knotting the score at four with 7:40 remaining.
  • The Knights deflected a chance that Kenny had to sprawl out to make the save and keep the score even. Stevenson fired a puck from the point and tried to whack away in front with attempts from Anthony Starzi, Palmer and Nick Dineen
  • The Knights called for a timeout with a faceoff in the Stevenson offensive zone. The Mustangs won the faceoff and ripped a quick shot that was smothered as time expired in regulation.

  • With frenetic up-and-down action during three-on-three play, Ryan Patrick laid a pass across that was just sent wide off the rush.
  • Watt converted another chance off the rush, notching the game-winner off a pass from Olson, just 1:41 into the extra session.

  • Olson, who scored the game-winner earlier in the week against Wilkes, had the lone assist on Watt's overtime marker on Friday.
  • Neumann scored the final two goals of the second period to seize back momentum after Stevenson took the lead.
  • Lowry posted his fifth goal of the season, finding the back of the net in consecutive games for the Mustangs. The third-period tally came at a crucial time for the Mustangs, who had surrendered three unanswered prior to the equalizer.
  • Kenny made 31 saves through two periods, finishing with 35 on the night. Now with 1,425 career saves, he is just 11 shy of tying the program's all-time save mark.
  • McCanney netted his sixth goal of the season with his solid breakaway tally.
  • Watt notched his fourth goal of the season with his deflection in the slot that pushed the Mustangs ahead 2-0.
  • Head coach Dominick Dawes was the head coach at Neumann from 2008-15.
  • Neumann nearly doubled the Stevenson shot on goal total through the first 20 minutes, but it was the Mustangs that held a 2-1 edge after the period.
  • Stevenson has won eight consecutive games in the series entering the Friday night matchup, outscoring the Knights 43-21 during that span.
  • The Mustangs entered the matchup ranked fifth in the UCHC standings, just behind Manhattanville and Nazareth.

  • Stevenson: The Mustangs have a quick turnaround, visiting Manhattanville on Saturday, February 5 at 3:00 p.m.
  • Neumann: The Knights host Chatham on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
