Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The 14th-ranked Stevenson men's lacrosse team controlled its season-opening matchup against No. 20 Ursinus from the start in a wire-to-wire 17-9 victory at Mustang Stadium.
Stevenson (1-0) was stout defensively, particularly in the first half, before the floodgates opened on the offensive side in the third quarter. Senior Cam Leydig notched five goals, two assists, three ground balls and a caused turnover in a complete effort.
Ursinus (0-1) attempted to close the gap during the second quarter, but could not get within striking distance before the Mustangs responded. Erik Ojert posted three goals for the visiting Bears, nabbing five ground balls in the process.
The Mustangs had a chance to showcase some depth and get their newcomers some valuable playing time in the opening matchup of the season. Shane Ford posted three goals, while Josh Brannan and Nolan Enneguess added two each. On the defensive side, stalwart senior goalie Marc Poust came up with 10 saves as Matt Wilson and Nicholas Mulvey recorded three caused turnovers apiece.
Stevenson began the game with consecutive goals, coming from Lucas Ingley at 10:04 and Enneguess shortly after at 9:41 for an early 2-0 cushion. Enneguess added his second goal of the stanza with an unassisted marker before Brannan vaulted the Mustangs ahead 4-1 with under one minute left in the opening frame. Brannan buried a man-up tally before Leydig added two unassisted tallies for a 7-4 lead at the intermission.
A four-goal spurt in the third quarter handed the Mustangs an 11-4 lead with momentum firmly in favor of the hosts. Ford, Ryan Coleman, Mitchell Lachman and Grant Zick all scored in the impressive start to the second half. After trading goals, Leydig provided a dagger goal after slipping free and pinpointing a shot with just 15 seconds left in the quarter for a 15-7 Mustang edge.
Each team found the net twice in the fourth as the level of physical play increased. Jack Scalati laid a pass off to Ford, who finished the chance for the final marker of the night with 1:17 left in the fourth. Stevenson won 16 of 30 faceoffs and scooped up 49 ground balls, compared to just 34 for Ursinus.
