Mustangs Squander Second Conference Game, 64-40, to Golden Wolves

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Stevenson's women's basketball team brought energy to Saturday afternoon's match following Wednesday's win at Hood College, but ultimately dropped the match to Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth opponent Alvernia University, 64-40.
 
Three Mustangs tied for top points on the day, with sophomore guard Laci Johnson, senior forward Maleah Smith, and sophomore guard Emori Jeselskis scoring eight each. First year forward Kalea Wynter had nine rebounds, with Smith leading at six offensive rebounds, and senior guard Morgan Pennick matching in defensive rebounds. Pennick also caused five turnovers on the day.
 
FIRST QUARTER
The Mustangs scored early with a layup from Wynter just under a minute in; however, the Golden Wolves gained a four-point lead by the end of the first period. Jeselskis brought the team to 11 points with a three-pointer with just under a minute left.
 
SECOND QUARTER
Johnson tied up to the conference opponent just minutes in, bringing the score to 15-15. However, the Golden Wolves matched the pace, quickly gaining a five-point lead before rounding out the half leading by 10 points ,31-21.
 
THIRD QUARTER
Pennick scored a three-pointer to begin the third quarter closing the opponents' lead, but the Golden Wolves maintained their surge and opened the gap by 14 total points, ending the quarter 48-34.
 
FOURTH QUARTER
The Golden Wolves secured their lead with a three-pointer from junior guard Jordan Karmonick minutes in. The Mustangs scored six more points but could not keep up with the pace of their opponent. The game ended in a 64-40 decision.
 
UP NEXT
The Mustangs fall to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in MAC play. The Golden Wolves improve to 6-3 overall and remain undefeated in the conference season 2-0. The Mustangs are on a quick turnaround and step out of conference play as they travel to Notre Dame University of Maryland on Monday, Dec. 5 for a 7 p.m. tipoff. The Golden Wolves host Haverford College Saturday, Dec. 10 at 1 p.m.
