Mustangs Battle for Lead with Gators, Drop Game 65-64

BALTIMORE, Md. – Stevenson women's basketball stepped out of their conference and fought a tough back-and-forth Monday night game against the Notre Dame University of Maryland Gators, finishing 65-64 at Gator Court.
 
Sophomore guard Laci Johnson topped the team with 13 points with sophomore guard Emori Jeselskis and first year forward Kalea Wynter following behind with 12 each. Senior forward Maleah Smith continued to lead in rebounds, with five defensive and nine total rebounds on the evening.         
 
FIRST QUARTER
The Mustangs secured a five-point lead early in the evening with a layup from Jeselskis and a three pointer from first year forward Tessa Boswell. The Gators trailed behind, but gained a one-point lead with just under five minutes left. The Mustangs pushed forward with an eight-point lead, ending the first quarter 18-10.
 
SECOND QUARTER
The Gators closed the gap as the second quarter was underway; however, Stevenson pushed on for a seven-point differential four minutes into the quarter. The Gators tied it up for the first time of the night off a Mustang foul, 24-24. The Mustangs rounded the half with a three-point lead, 31-28.
 
THIRD QUARTER
The Mustangs pushed for their largest lead of the night, moving ahead by eight points just minutes in with a three-pointer from Jeselskis. Though the Gators scored 16 points and brought the game to 49-44, they still trailed the Mustangs.
 
FOURTH QUARTER
The Gators were able to close the gap with some free throws as the final quarter progressed.  A three-pointer from sophomore guard/forward Alexis Durham gave the Gators the lead. The Mustangs pressed on, tying the game for the first time in the quarter with a layup from senior guard Aysia Ferguson.  The lead changed on three more occasions with overtime on the horizon. The night ended with a successful free throw from the Gators off a Mustang foul by first year guard Erin Dixon. The night ended in a 65-64 decision for the Gators.
 
UP NEXT
The Mustangs return to conference play on Wednesday when they travel to Widener University for an 8 p.m. tipoff following men's basketball. The Gators travel to St. Mary's College of Maryland for a Saturday tipoff at 1 p.m.
