Ferrera Nets Two as Mustangs Down Wilkes 5-2

REISTERSTOWN, Md. – Senior captain Tea Ferrera lead the Mustangs with two goals as the Stevenson women's ice hockey team (5-4, 3-2 UCHC, 1-0 MAC) defeated Wilkes (2-6-1, 2-3-1 UCHC, 0-1 MAC) by a score of 5-2 Friday night at the Reisterstwon Sportsplex.
 
The first period was tightly contested with Stevenson holding a slight edge in shots at 10-9. The Mustangs struck first at 9:30 when Maddie Silverman sent home her first goal of the season, assisted by Kali Jo Zagula. The Colonels knotted the game at one goal a-piece at the 13:52 mark with a goal from Abby Miller. Stevenson finished the remainder of the period with an offensive charge, taking five shots to just one from Wilkes.
 
Stevenson carried is momentum to the second period adding the go-ahead goal early in the frame. Meghan Croyle found the back of the net just 3:02 into the period, assisted by Gracie Payne. Stevenson goalie, Maggie Senhert faced ten shots in the middle frame, stopping them all to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead after two periods.
 
Tea Ferrera opened the scoring in the third period, registering her first goal of the game and the eventual game-winner just 1:02 into the final period. Wilkes narrowed the lead at 3:54 with a goal from Julie Patterson. Ferrera picked up her second goal of the game on the power play at 12:34 with assists from Maggie Dean and Meghan Croyle.
 
With a power play opportunity in the final two minutes of the game, the Colonels emptied the net for an extra skater. Gracie Payne picked up a loose puck in her defensive zone and fired towards the open net, sliding the puck past the undefended goal line a short-handed goal at 18:33.

Stevenson and Wilkes finish the two-game series Saturday, December 3 at 7pm at the Reisterstown Sportsplex.
