DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Stevenson women's basketball team entered day one of the Daytona Beach Shootout, ending the afternoon in a close loss to the Wheaton College of Massachusetts Lyons, 58-54 in Ocean Center.
The Mustangs' senior guard
Aysia Ferguson pushed to earn 12 points on the afternoon, also leading with six rebounds. Sophomore guard
Emori Jeselskis contributed 11 points and seven out of eight attempted free throws, while first year forward
Tessa Boswell secured a team leading total of 12 points on the afternoon.
FIRST QUARTER
The Lyons gained a five-point lead before a successful free throw from Laci Jonhson in the first four minutes of the game. The Mustangs continued to trail, ending the quarter with a three- pointer from Boswell with six seconds remaining.
SECOND QUARTER
In the second, the Lyons continued to push with two successful shots bringing the score to 16-8. Jeselskis secured a jumper with 6:45 left, tightening the gap to 16-10. Following a series of free throws from T. Boswell, first year guard
Erin Dixon created a two-point game with just over five minutes remaining. The Lyons pushed to keep their lead with a series of free throws before the Mustangs secured the lone tie of the game with two successful free throws by
Morgan Pennick. The Mustangs tried to close the gap one more time in the quarter, 21-20, but failed to match pace with the Lyons as the half ended 27-23.
THIRD QUARTER
The Mustangs continued to keep pace with the Lyons as the quarter progressed, securing 11 total points in the period. Despite successful free throws and layups, the Mustangs trailed, 46-34, at the end of the third.
FOURTH QUARTER
The Mustangs pushed for a closer gap in the final quarter, seeing a five-point game with a lay-up from Ferguson with less than five minutes remaining. While the Mustangs scored nine more points on the afternoon, they continued to trail, ending the afternoon 58-54 against the Lyons.
