REISTERSTOWN, Md. – Sophomore
Graeme McCrory netted a goal and an assist as the Stevenson men's ice hockey team (1-2) fell to fifth-ranked Utica (1-2) 3-4 in overtime to open UCHC play Friday night at Reisterstown Sportsplex.
Stevenson took seven of the game's first eight shots before finding the back of the net on its ninth shot. First year
John Musella picked up his first career goal just five minutes into the game, assisted by
Brendan Rylott and
Frank Vitucci.
Alex Rivet gave Stevenson a 2-0 lead 29 seconds later with assists from
Kyle Lightfoot and
Graeme McCrory.
Utica responded to tie the game with goals from Brandon Osmundson at 8:09 and Dante Zapata at 16:20 to round out the opening frame.
The Pioneers carried their momentum into the second period outshooting the Mustangs 16-7 in the frame. However, Stevenson would find the back of the net just five minutes into the period again to take a 3-2 lead on a goal from
Graeme McCrory with assists from
Evan Beers and
Aidan McDowell. Stevenson goaltender
Ryan Kenny added 12 saves over the next 12 minutes before Utica netted the equalizer once more on a goal from Remy Parker with two minutes remaining in the period.
The Pioneers continued to outshoot the Mustangs in the third period, holding a 10-3 advantage in the category. Despite two power play opportunities in the third period, Stevenson was unable to muster any shots on the chances.
Utica commanded possession in the three-on-three overtime period, netting the game winner on the lone shot in the period off the stick of Jayson Dobay.
