Men’s basketball falls in conference opener to Hood

Owings Mills, Md. - Stevenson men's basketball fell to Hood College 102-67 as mistakes piled up Wednesday night in the Mustangs' Middle Atlantic Conference opener. 
 
First Half 
Early Mustang turnovers forced coach Gary Stewart to call an early timeout as Hood went up 5-0 about a minute into the game. Following the timeout, graduate student guard McKale Williams sank a long three-pointer that got the Mustangs on the board, with another three a minute later. Stevenson junior guard Ethan Jones and sophomore forward Cameron Smith came up with back-to-back blocks as the Mustangs trailed 19-25 with eight minutes left.  The Blazers went on to open an 11-point advantage, wrapping up the first half 47-36.

Second Half 
More turnovers by Stevenson helped the Blazers to a 54-38 lead before Ethan Jones sank a jump shot. The Mustangs began to fall behind before senior guard Davon Jones hit a three-point shot at 14:58, assisted by junior guard Cameron Sapienza, bringing the score to 63-47 in Hood's favor. At 10:48 Sapienza sunk a deep three-pointer and was fouled, making the free throw an completing the four-point play. But Hood opened a 30-point lead and the Blazers sent in five bench players for the remaining three minutes.

Following the loss, Stevenson falls to 5-2 (0-1) and snapped their five-game winning streak. They are next set to host Alvernia University on Saturday, Dec. 3 with tip-off scheduled for 3 p.m. Hood improves to 4-3 and next travel to Albright College on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 1 p.m.
