Mustangs Open Tipoff Tournament with 60-52 Loss

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Stevenson women's basketball team fought a tough battle in their initial game of the Morin Memorial tournament, dropping the match 60-52 to Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday evening at Williams College.
 
Sophomore guard Laci Johnson and senior guard Aysia Ferguson continued to push offensively, scoring 17 and 10 points respectively. Senior forward Morgan DeBeary led the Mustangs with six rebounds on four turnovers, tying in turnovers with Johnson, who added three 3-pointers to her record.
 
FIRST HALF
 
The Warriors got on the board early, but while they pushed to solidify their lead, the Mustangs rounded the first quarter 13-12 with a layup from Johnson. The Mustangs maintained a three- point lead until 2:26 in the second quarter. With less than 45 seconds left in the half, the Mustangs could not break the defense, stalemating their score at 26. The Warriors scored a half-ending layup, leading 27-26.
 
SECOND HALF
By the third quarter, the Warriors solidified their lead by an eight-point high. The Mustangs reached 34 points, but faced strong Warrior defense as the opposition surpassed 40 points. The last quarter opened with a 3-pointer from Johnson as the Warriors hit 43 points. Freshman forward Kalea Wynter broke the 40-point mark for the Mustangs, but the Warriors were well on their way to victory. Senior forward Maleah Smith brought the Mustangs to 50 points with two more points added at the end of the game from first year forward  Sanaa Thorne, but the game's  final score, 60-52, saw the Mustangs at a loss.
 
The Mustangs' overall record is now 1-1. The Warriors added their first win, improving to 1-2.
 
UP NEXT
 
The Mustangs return to Williams College with a match against the home team Ephs tomorrow at 3 p.m. The Warriors return to the tournament with a game against Albright University tomorrow at 1 p.m.
