OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson women's basketball team opened the winter 2022-23 season with a game against the Goucher Gophers, finishing on top with final score of 81-75. Sophomore guard Laci Johnson, with 19 points, and senior guard Aysia Ferguson, with 16 points, led the Mustangs to victory in the season opener. Gopher graduate student guard Kyla Smith ended the match with 43 points to her record.
FIRST HALF
The Mustangs got on the board early with a three pointer from Johnson. The teams battled for the lead as freshman forward Tessa Boswell put the Mustangs on top with a three pointer three and a half minutes in. Ending the first quarter on top with 11 rebounds to the Gophers' eight, the Mustangs ended the first quarter ahead 18-11. Solidifying their lead in the second quarter, the Mustangs scored 21 points to the Gophers' 18, with both teams making two three pointer shots.
SECOND HALF
While the Gophers trailed, the Mustangs hit the 50
th point just under five minutes in. Boswell brought the score to 59 with a three pointer with just under two minutes remaining. In a back-and-forth affair in the fourth quarter, the Mustangs ended their home opener with a final score of 81-75. The Mustangs tallied eight defensive and five offensive rebounds in the last quarter, bringing their total to 43 to the Gophers' 44. Senior guard Morgan Pennick and Boswell opened their seasons scoring nine points each.

The Mustangs hit the road following this match as they travel to Williams College for the Morin Memorial Tournament with a Saturday game against Eastern Connecticut State University at 7 p.m. The Gophers travel to Christopher Newport University on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 6 p.m.
