Men's Basketball win 2022 Stevenson Tip-Off Classic 73-56

Owings Mills, Md. - The Stevenson men's basketball team defeated Maine Maritime Academy 73-56 to win the 2022 Stevenson Tip-Off Classic on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore forward Cameron Smith, graduate students and guards McKale Williams and Connor Walsh all scored in double digits. Williams also had 10 rebounds to record his first double-double of the young season.

First half

Smith opened the scoring for the Mustangs as the teams began a back-and-forth first half. A steal by Smith sent Williams the other way at 16:09 for a three-point shot, increasing the Mustangs' lead to 4. With 7:57 left in the half, senior guard Davon Jones gave the Mustangs the largest lead in the half, 21-16.  Walsh made a turnaround jumper with four seconds remaining to give Stevenson the 30-28 lead going into half time.

Second Half

Despite a run of foul calls, the Mustangs held strong defensively, giving up only 28 points in each half. Six minutes in, junior guard Ethan Jones was handed a technical foul for a flop. The crowd made themselves heard at several points during the game, but the loudest came as Walsh later drained a three to give the Mustangs their largest lead of the night, up 18. Stevenson's defense gave up only one point in the final three minutes to secure the victory.

With this win over the Mariners, the Mustangs improve to 2-1 and are next set to host Gettysburg College on Wednesday, Nov. 16 with tipoff scheduled for 8 p.m. The Mariners fall to 1-1, and they will return home to take on the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday, Nov. 15.
