REISTERSTOWN, Md. – Senior
Karly Aguirre deposited all three goals for the Stevenson women's ice hockey team (3-2-0, 1-0-0 UCHC) to defeat the Neumann Knights (0-5-0, 0-3-0 UCHC) by a score of 3-2 Friday afternoon at the Reisterstown Sportsplex.
Neumann opened the scoring with an opportunistic goal by Vicky Maloney assisted by Gia Santorello at the 14:57. The Mustangs earned a power play at 15:36 and picked up the equalizer 14 seconds in the extra man opportunity.
Karly Aguirre netted her second goal of the season tying the game at one-goal a-piece.
Hannah Labbe aided the goal with her second assist of the season.
The Mustangs continued their momentum into the second period, scoring a goal in the first five minutes to take a 2-1 lead. Aguirre scored her second goal of the game at 4:57 with assists from
Hannah Labbe and Kali Jo Zagula. The Knights had a chance to find tie the game with a 3-on-1 breakaway chance but the shot from Lian Sydorowicz was swept aside by Stevenson goalie
Maggie Sehnert.
The Knights continued their possession in the offensive zone, taking two more shots on the possession. Mikaylee Henhawk ripped a shot at the blue line that was blocked by
Karly Aguirre. The puck rebounded to the neutral zone, springing Aguirre to a breakaway. With a quick deke, Aguirre netted her third goal of the game to give Stevenson a 3-1 margin at 11:00 into the second period.
Neumann was relentless in the offensive effort in the third period, ripping 17 shots in the final frame. The Knights found the back of the net at the 16:32 mark with a power play goal from Jamiyah Alexander to narrow the gap to 3-2. With a faceoff in the Stevenson defensive zone, the Knights pulled their goal for an extra skater. Neumann continued its offensive push, taking seven shots in the final 2:15 of the game, all stopped by Sehnert.
