Vaeth records 1000th Career Dig as Mustangs Go the Distance at Lebanon Valley

ANNVILE, Pa. – Stevenson senior Kayla Vaeth recorded 28 digs and surpassed the 1000 career digs mark as the Stevenson women's volleyball team (17-2, 4-0 MACC) defeated Lebanon Valley (10-6, 2-3 MACC) 3-2 in a thrilling five-set match to remain perfect in MAC Commonwealth play Wednesday night at Sorrentino Gymnasium. Set scores were 25-16, 25-19, 19-25, 20-25, 15-7.
 
Stevenson fell to an early deficit in the first set but overtook the Dutchwomen lead with a four-point rally to a 10-7 lead capped off with a kill from Giulia Viglietta and never relinquished the advantage. The Mustangs pressed their lead to its widest margin at the 20-14 mark on a kill from Kylie DesLauriers. The Mustangs finished the opening set on a 5-1 run for a 25-16 victory.
 
In the second set, Stevenson continued to show its strength with a .344 hitting percentage while holding the Dutchwomen to a .075 hit percentage. The frame was at 11 a-piece before the Mustangs rifled off a seven-point run to leverage an 18-11 lead capped off by back-to-back kills from Rileigh Kimball. Lebanon Valley added a 5-1 run to narrow the gap to 21-17 but Stevenson would finish the set with a 4-3 run to take the frame at 25-19.
 
The Mustangs rallied to a 12-9 advantage in the third before a five-point run gave the Dutchwomen a 12-14 lead that they would never relinquish. Shannon Baily sent home a kill to halt the Lebanon Valley run. The Mustangs were able to tally three points together to narrow the gap to 18-22 but the Dutchwomen finished the frame on a 3-1 run for a 19-25 victory.
 
The fourth set was tightly contested with several lead changes and tie scores. With the frame knotted at nine points a-piece, Lebanon Valley tied four points together for a 9-13 advantage. The Mustangs narrowed the gap with a four-point rally of their own to the 13-15 mark and continued to chip away at the lead, nearly tying the frame at the 18-19 mark. Lebanon Valley embarked on a 6-2 run to finish the frame for a 20-25 victory and tie the match at two sets a-piece.
 
In the fifth set, Stevenson used three separate three-point rallies to take a 10-3 lead capped off with a block from Haley Hoover and Rileigh Kimball. The Dutchwomen chipped away at the Mustang lead, cutting the margin in half at the 14-7 mark. Samantha Simmer sent home the final tally to give Stevenson a 15-7 fifth-set victory.  
 
Numbers and Notes
  • Kayla Vaeth added 28 digs to bring her career total to 1,019, placing her ninth all-time. She is just 17 digs away from surpassing Jessica Geiselman for eighth all-time.
  • Giulia Viglietta totaled 11 kills to tie a career-high (vs Dickinson 9/24/22).
  • Rileigh Kimball added 10 kills, the fifth time she has recorded double-digit kills this season.
  • Sarah Straub totaled seven blocks to lead the match while Haley Hoover added six.
  • The Mustangs added a season-high 24 total blocks in the match while holding LVC to just three.
  • Makala Thompson dished out 22 assists while Samantha Simmers added 11.
