OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Stevenson senior
Sarah Straub tied a season-high nine kills to lead the Stevenson women's volleyball team (18-2, 4-0 MACC) defeated Johns Hopkins (9-7, 4-0 Centennial) 3-1 Friday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium. Set scores were 25-16, 25-18, 20-15, 25-14.
Stevenson and Johns Hopkins battled through five tie scores and three lead changes in the early stages of the first set before the Mustangs were able to open a 13-9 advantage on the heels of four-point run capped off with back-to-back aces from
Makala Thompson.
The Blue Jays narrowed the gap to 14-13 but the Mustangs earned a side-out and never allowed Johns Hopkins within one for the remainder of the set.
Haley Hoover added back-to-back kills to cap a four-point rally for the Mustangs at the 18-13 mark. Stevenson finished the frame on a 6-1 streak to win the opening set 25-16.
The Mustangs continued their momentum into the second set jumping to an 8-4 lead. The Mustangs took advantage of Blue Jay attack errors to move their advantage to 16-10. Stevenson leveraged its lead to its widest margin at the 20-11 mark on the heels of a four-point rally. The Mustangs surrendered a 6-4 run to the Blue Jays to close the frame but were able to hold on for a 25-18 set victory.
Johns Hopkins rifled off the first four points of the set and never relinquished the lead in the third frame. Stevenson narrowed the gap to 8-9 on a Blue Jay attack error but were unable to overtake the Hopkins lead. An eight-point Hopkins sprint put the Mustangs in a 11-21 deficit with the set seemingly out of reach.
Stevenson roared back with a seven-point rally to narrow the gap to 19-22 with kills from
Shannon Baily,
Giulia Viglietta and
Rileigh Kimball and two kills from
Sarah Straub. However, Johns Hopkins took three of the final four points to win the frame 20-25.
Stevenson nearly led the fourth set wire-to-wire, adding a .222 hit percentage in the frame. The Mustangs used steady play to leverage a 16-7, never allowing the Blue Jays to string more than two points together to that point. Straub added a block to cap a three-point run to move the Stevenson advantage to 19-8.
Kylie DesLauriers added back-to-back blocks to finish a four-point run to open the Mustang lead to 24-13.
Rileigh Kimball put down the final point to seal the 25-14 victory.

- Stevenson returns to action Saturday, October 8 to host a tri-match with McDaniel and Rowan. The Mustangs will face McDaniel at 10am and Rowan at 2pm, all at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
