REISTERSTOWN, Md. – The Stevenson men's ice hockey team (0-1-0) dropped its 2022-23 season opener 3-4 to SUNY Canton Saturday night at Reisterstown Sportsplex.
Canton took a quick two-goal lead in the first period with a goal from Zac Sirota at 4:19 followed by a five-on-three power play goal from Evan Pringle at 12:37. Just 18 seconds later, while the penalty kill continued,
Anthony Starzi forced a turnover in the neutral zone and carried the puck to the crease and dumped in the Mustangs first goal of the season, cutting the deficit in half.
Stevenson opened the second period with a barrage of shots before depositing the equalizing goal on a shot from
John Musella assisted by
Brendan Rylott and
Frank Vitucci at 7:21 Almost exactly a minute later, Canton regained its lead with a goal from Matthew Headland at 8:22.
Stevenson earned a lengthy power play and racked up four shots before finding the back of the net with the fifth. The power play goal came at 13:24 off the stick of
Malcolm Palmer with assists from
Kyle Lightfoot and
Jack Karlsson, knotting the game at three goals a-piece.
The third period was calmer with each team picking up one penalty each in the entire period while both goaltenders played well, defending their creases with poise. A late period penalty committed by the Mustangs gave the Roos a power play with less than two minutes remaining. The Roos capitalized on their opportunity with the game-winner coming off the stick of Zac Sirota with 10 seconds remaining.
