OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Mustangs were tested against nationally ranked Messiah College, losing 6-0 on Wednesday night at Owings Mills East.
Sophomore midfielder Rylee Leakway recorded three shots on the afternoon, while junior attack Emma Gladstein had two attempts while inserting four penalty corners for the home team.
Messiah tested the Mustangs early as the Falcons found the back of the box twice within the first five minutes of the match off the sticks of sophomore forward/midfielder Leah Bryner and senior forward Ashlyn Smith. Both were assisted by sophomore midfielder Kelsey Heltzel. SU senior goalkeeper Jamie Fritz earned a save off a Messiah attempt in the 12th minute.
The Falcons continued to press on, challenging the Mustangs as the first quarter ended.
The Mustangs earned their first penalty corner just over two minutes in, resulting in Leakway's first shot saved by Messiah's senior goalkeeper Catie Brubaker. The Mustangs answered seconds later with two more penalty corners inserted by Gladstein. Leakway earned her second shot in the 28th minute after the fourth and final Mustangs' penalty corner of the match. The Falcons earned two more attempts in the quarter, one saved by Fritz in the 28th minute.
Fritz opened the third quarter with a save off an attempt from first year forward/midfielder Mallory Kline. The Falcons dominated in the third quarter, as they scored their fifth goal of the match in the 39th minute.
The Mustangs pressed offensively to begin the final quarter with an off-target attempt from Gladstein. The Falcons secured their win with the sixth and final goal in the 55th minute. Gladstein saw her last shot go just wide in the 57th minute, ending the match art 6-0, Falcons.
The Mustangs fall to 6-9 overall and 2-4 in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) play, while the number eight nationally ranked Falcons improve to 12-2 overall and 7-0 in conference play.
