Stevenson Picks Up Tri-Match Split with Scranton, Washington & Lee

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson women's volleyball team (22-3, 5-0 MACC) defeated Scranton (16-9, 4-0 Landmark) 3-1 before falling to Washington and Lee (14-8, 9-1 ODAC) 1-3 Saturday afternoon at Owings Mills gym.
 
Match 1 vs Scranton (24-26, 25-22, 25-17, 25-16)
 
In the first Set, Stevenson hit just .038 while the Royals added a .192 hit percentage. The Mustangs leveraged a 9-7 lead before a five-point rally swung the lead to Scranton 12-9. Rileigh Kimball and Haley Hoover teamed up for a block to move the Mustang advantage to 17-16.
 
The sides traded four-point runs with Scranton taking a narrows 22-21 lead. The teams sided out for the next four points before Scranton earned the final two tallies to take the opening frame 26-24.
 
The Mustangs took a 15-12 lead in the second set, using a 5-1 run to get there with kills from Shannon Baily and Sarah Straub. Scranton leveraged Mustang attack errors to narrow the gap to 19-18. The Mustangs finished the set on a 5-3 run with the duo of Rileigh Kimball and Haley Hoover picking up a block for a 25-22 victory.
 
In the third set, the Mustangs hit a blistering .323 while holding Scranton to a .156 hit percentage. A three-point rally gave the Mustangs a 15-9 lead with kills from Kylie DesLauriers and Rileigh Kimball. Stevenson used a 6-3 run to finish the set with Haley Hoover picking up the final kill for a 25-17 victory.
 
In the fourth set, the Mustangs fell behind 10-7 before knotting the frame at 10 a-piece with a three-point run on a block from Straub and Molly Joyner, an ace from Makala Thompson and a kill from Kylie DesLauriers. Stevenson used a 7-1 run to open a 17-14 margin with kills from four different players. The Mustangs finished the set on a 8-1 tear with Sarah Straub earning the final kill for a 25-16 victory.
 
Match 2 vs Washington & Lee (17-25, 13-25, 25-20, 13-25)
 
In the first set, the Generals jumped to a 14-7 advantage and never looked back. Stevenson narrowed the gap to 18-13 with a kill followed by an ace from Shannon Baily. The teams traded the final eight points with the Generals taking the opening frame 17-25.
 
The Mustangs opened a 7-2 lead to start the second set but an eight-point Washington & Lee run swung the advantage to the Generals at 7-10. Another seven-point streak from the Generals extended their lead to 10-19. W&L finished the set on a 6-2 run to take the frame 13-25.
 
In the third set, the Mustangs used a 10-1 run to open an 18-5 advantage and never relinquished the lead. W&L narrowed the gap with a 11-2 run at the 22-18 mark, but the Mustangs took three of the final five points to win the set 25-20.
 
The fourth set was back-and-fourth early until a 7-1 run from Washington & Lee gave the generals a 16-9 lead. The Mustangs were unable to tally more than a point at a time to drop the fourth set 13-25.
 
Numbers and Notes
  • The Mustangs picked up 12 blocks against Scranton and another six against W&L
  • Haley Hoover tallied six total blocks on the day (four vs Scranton, two vs W&L)
  • Shannon Baily notched 14 kills in each match to bring her season total to a team-leading 253.
  • Kayla Vaeth added 18 digs against Scranton and 13 against W&L.

  • The Mustangs return to action on Wednesday, October 19 to face York (Pa.) in MAC Commonwealth play. The match is set to start at 7pm in York, Pa.
