YORK, Pa. – The Stevenson women's volleyball team (23-3, 6-0 MACC) set a program record with 19 total blocks to defeat York (10-10, 2-4 MACC) 3-1 Wednesday night at Wolf Gym to remain perfect in MAC Commonwealth play. With the victory, the Mustangs clinch a berth to the 2022 MAC Commonwealth Championship. Set Scores were 20-25, 25-23, 25-19 and 25-8.
The Spartans opened a 3-6 lead to begin the first set with a five-point run. The Mustangs chipped away, closing the gap to 12-13 on a kill from
Kylie DesLauriers.
Shannon Baily notched back-to-back kills at the 20-22 mark but the Spartans took the final three points of the set for a 20-25 victory.
York again jumped to an early advantage in the second set with 7-11 lead. Stevenson battled back to knot the frame at 15 a-piece with a kill from
Rileigh Kimball followed by a block from duo of
Haley Hoover and
Makala Thompson. The sides traded points, enduring four more tie scores before an ace from
Shannon Baily gave Stevenson a 20-19 advantage.
The teams continued to battle through three more tie scores before the Mustangs could tally two points together for a slim 24-22 lead. A York ball handling error gave Stevenson the frame at 25-23 and tied the match at one set a-piece.
The third set was tightly contested with the sides enduring nine tie scores and three lead changes. Stevenson leveraged a 12-10 lead before York strung together a four-point run for a 12-14 lead. Baily and
Giulia Viglietta sent home back-to-back kills to tie the set at 14.
The Mustangs used a trio of Spartan errors to take a 17-15 lead and never looked back. A five-point run capped off by a kill from Kimball gave the Mustangs a 22-16 lead, the largest advantage of the frame.
Haley Hoover sent home the final kill finish a 3-1 run to end the set and give Stevenson a 25-19 victory.
Stevenson carried its momentum to the fourth set, ripping the first eight points of the frame with kills from Viglietta and
Sarah Straub before the pair teamed up for back-to-back blocks. Stevenson added a blistering 11-1 run to leverage a 20-6 lead using a five-point and six-point run to get there. The Mustangs finished the frame on a 6-2 tear to win the set 25-8.
Numbers and Notes
- Stevenson recorded a program record 19 total blocks on 18 block assists and one solo block. The previous record was 15 total blocks which was done twice by the 2016 team (vs Stockton; 10/15/2016, vs Ohio Northern; 9/17/2016).
- Six different Mustangs recorded blocks.
- Giulia Viglietta recorded six total blocks while Haley Hoover added five.
- Rileigh Kimball tied a career-high 14 kills, the third time she has reached the mark this season.
- Sarah Straub added six kills with a .556 attack percentage and four total blocks.
- Shannon Baily, Haley Hoover and Rileigh Kimball all hit over .300 with nine or more attempts.
