GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Stevenson women's volleyball team (16-2, 3-0 MAC) defeated Swarthmore (9-4, 2-1 Centennial) in straight sets before falling to Gettysburg (14-3, 1-2 Centennial) in straight sets. The loss to Gettysburg snapped an eight-game win streak fro the Mustangs.
Match 1 vs Swarthmore (25-22, 25-18, 25-15)
Stevenson set the pace early in the first set, hitting .375 while the sides battled through seven tie scores and two tie scores. The Mustangs overtook the Swarthmore lead with a four-point rally capped off by back-to-back aces from
Haley Hoover for a narrow 13-12 lead. The sides traded points to an 18-18 tie before a three-point run gave the Mustangs a 21-18 lead. The Phoenix narrowed the gap to 21-20 but Stevenson finished the frame on a 4-2 run to take the set 25-22.
Stevenson led the second set wire-to-wire leveraging a 13-10 lead with a three-point run which included two kills from
Shannon Baily and another from
Kayla Vaeth. The Mustangs moved their lead to 20-12 with a 8-2 run that included kills from
Rileigh Kimball,
Haley Hoover and
Kylie DesLauriers. Swarthmore added a 6-3 run to narrow the gap to 24-18 but the Mustang advantage was too much to overcome.
Kylie DesLauriers added the final tally to give Stevenson the middle set victory at 25-18.
The third set was tightly contested with 10 tie scores and half as many lead changes.
Shannon Baily sent down back-to-back kills while
Makala Thompson added an ace to give Stevenson a slight 9-7 lead. Swarthmore took the lead with a 5-1 run for a 10-12 advantage. Stevenson embarked on a 10-1 tear to take a 20-13 lead with kills from
Sarah Straub,
Giulia Viglietta and
Haley Hoover. The Mustangs would take five of the final six points to take the final set 25-15.
Match 2 vs Gettysburg (23-25, 19-25, 21-25)
The first set was tightly contested with the sides never being separated by more than three points.
Molly Joyner added back-to-back kills to give Stevenson a 10-7 advantage, but Gettysburg added a 5-1 run to take a 11-12 lead. Stevenson regained the lead with a three-point rally which included kills from
Rileigh Kimball and
Samantha Simmers at the 20-19 mark. The Bullets took the advantage back with a four-point rally before a Stevenson three-point rally knotted the set at 23 a-piece. Gettysburg won the final two points of the set to take the opening frame 23-25.
The Mustangs sprinted to an 8-2 advantage to start the second using a six-point run to get there which included two kills from
Rileigh Kimball and a kill and an ace from
Shannon Baily. The Bullets regained the lead with a six-point run for a 15-18 lead and never relinquished the advantage. The Mustangs narrowed the gap with an ace from
Kayla Vaeth at the 19-23 mark, but Gettysburg added the final two tallies of the set for a 19-25 victory.
The Mustangs fell to an early deficit in the third set before climbing back to a 9-9 tie with a kill from
Haley Hoover. Stevenson strung four points together to take a 15-14 advantage with back-to-back kills from
Sarah Straub and another from
Giulia Viglietta. Stevenson held a 18-17 advantage before the Bullets took a 18-20 lead on a three-point run. The sides traded points before Gettysburg finished the set on a 4-1 run to win the final frame 21-25.
