Mustangs Can't Overcome Second Period Surge from SUNY Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- The floodgates opened for SUNY Brockport near the end of the second period in a 5-1 victory against the Stevenson men's hockey team on Saturday afternoon. 

Scoring three goals in a 2:42 span during the second, SUNY Brockport (9-5) pulled away after 40 minutes. Despite the score, Stevenson (9-4-1) kept pace with the Golden Eagles in shots with the hosts posting a 42-36 advantage. 

Marko Sturma saw his first action of the season in a relief capacity, entering the game late into the second period. Blake Colman found the back of the net in the third off a slap shot from the point. 

  • Stevenson posted a pair of early chances with shots from Luke Benitez and Mac Lowry, both saved by Brockport goalie Aidan Curry. 
  • With the man-advantage, Ryan Patrick and Lowry both had chances for the Mustangs as the game remained scoreless. 
  • Stevenson was whistled for a hooking call as Brockport cashed in on the power-play chance with a marker from Zach Norby at 15:43. 
  • Seth Bergeron and Chad Watt each sent chances toward the Golden Eagle net as the hosts took a 1-0 lead into the intermission. 

  • The Golden Eagles found the net four times in the second, including three goals in a 2:42 span over the last few minutes. 
  • Stevenson killed off a Brockport power-play opportunity before the hosts found the net shortly after the man advantage expired. 
  • Curry came up large with nine saves on a Mustang power-play chance about five 15 minutes into the second. 
  • Shortly after the fifth goal, a scrum ensued behind the Brockport net resulting in multiple penalties for each team. 

  • Zach Egber and Frank Vitucci had scoring chances for the Mustangs within the first five minutes of the stanza. 
  • Stevenson continued to battle despite several penalties.
  • Colman launched one into the net from the blue line along the right point off a feed from Graeme McCrory as Stevenson found its way into the scoring column at 16:35. 
  • The Mustangs pulled the goalie over the last few minutes of the stanza during 4-on-4 play. 

  • Stevenson allowed five or more goals for just the third time this season. 
  • Colman posted his first goal of the 2021-22 season with his blast in the third period for the Mustangs. 
  • Jacob King had a pair of tallies for Brockport, which had three different goal scorers. 
  • Brockport went 3-for-6 on the power-play while the Mustangs went 0-for-3. 
  • Lowry and Brendan Rylott posted five shots each to pace the Mustangs. 
  • Sturma made 14 saves for Stevenson, while Ryan Kenny ahd 23. 
  • The Mustangs faced a pair of tough opponents in their return to the ice in 2022. SUNY Geneseo ranked second in the USCHO NCAA DIII poll, while Brockport was receiving votes along with Stevenson. 

  • Stevenson: The Mustangs are back home, welcoming Wilkes to the Reisterstown Sportsplex on Friday, January 14 at 7:00 p.m. 
  • SUNY Brockport: The Golden Eagles square off with Lebanon Valley on Saturday, January 15 at 4:00 p.m.
