Mustangs Sweep Mount Union, Go the Distance with No.3 Dominican (IL)

Huntingdon, Pa. - The Stevenson men's volleyball team defeated Mount Union in straight sets but fell to No. 3 Dominican in five sets during the Juniata Tournament at Memorial Gym in Huntingdon, Pa.

 

  • Set scores were 14-25, 18-25, 13-25.
  • Stevenson never trailed in the first set stretching an early lead with kills from Tim Flanagan and Aiden O'Brien.
  • In set two, the Mustangs overcame an early deficit with back-to-back aces from Brian Farrell.
  • Aleks Melbardis earned the final point of set two with a kill aided by Justin Novoa.
  • Tyler Aiello dropped three aces to give Stevenson a 6-16 lead in the third set.
  • Farrel added two more aces to draw the lead to 9-22.
  • The final point of the match was earned on a service error.

 

  • Stevenson remained in stride with No. 3 Dominican in the first set before stumbling with attack errors giving the Stars a 10-13 lead.
  • The Mustangs could not regain momentum and dropped the first set on a pair of attack errors.
  • In set two, the Mustangs went a 6-0 run to jump to an 11-8 lead.
  • The teams traded kills until a pair of aces by Tanner Stauffer widened the margin to 15-10. Melbardis finished off the set with a kill to notched the match at 1 set won per team.
  • Stevenson started set three strong and survived three tie scores before picking up four straight points to earn a 11-7 lead with a kill by Elliot De La Torre.
  • Tim Flanagan added back-to-back aces to move the set to 18-12.
  • The Mustangs would survive a 4-0 run by Dominican before a service error halted the Starts momentum.
  • O'Brien sealed set 3 for Stevenson with a kill.
  • Stevenson stumbled in set four, falling to a 1-7 deficit and were unable to muster a comeback.
  • Stevenson mounted a quick start in the fifth frame setting a 9-3 pace. 
  • Dominican notched the set at 12-`12 with a 5-0 run of their own.
  • Stevenson remained in stride with the Stars before a Dominican kill and Mustang attack error sealed the match for Dominican.

 

  • Flanagan tallied 23 kills on the day with 10 against Mount Union and 13 against No. 3 Dominican
  • Brian Farrell and Tyler Aiello each notched four aces against Mount Union.
  • Melbardis lead the team with 14 digs against No. 3 Dominican.

 

  • Stevenson remains on the road to face Lancaster Bible this Wednesday, January 26.
