Mustangs Down Cal Lutheran, No. 8 SUNY New Paltz in Slug Slam

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Stevenson Men's Volleyball team improved to 2-0 after defeating Cal Lutheran 3-2 and No. 8 SUNY New Paltz 3-0 Friday evening. 

  • Set scores were 25-18, 25-23, 20-25, 21-25, 15-8
  • Stevenson trailed early in the first set but quickly gained the lead after a Cal Lutheran service error and never trailed again.
  • The Mustangs took the second set surviving a 7-1 run by the Kingsmen before a Tim Flanagan block sealed the set for the Mustangs.
  • Stevenson fell behind early in set three and lost the frame.
  • Set four was tightly contested until a 4-0 Cal Lutheran run was halted by a Tanner Stauffer kill but the lead was too large to overcome.
  • The Mustangs won the fifth set decisively capping the final frame on an 8-3 run.
  • Stevenson tallied 28 block assists and 21 total blocks in the match.
  • Stauffer finished the match with 12 kills and 37 assists. 
  • Flanagan and Aiden O'Brien tacked on seven kills each.

  • Set scores were 25-21, 25-20, 26-24
  • Stevenson took the first set with an early 5-0 run, never relinquishing the lead.
  • A 4-0 run by the Mustangs which included back-to-back aces by Michael Dougherty set up Stevenson to take the second set.
  • Set three was tightly contested until a key kill by Aleks Melbardis and a Hawks attack error capped the match for the Mustangs.
  • Elliot De La Torre led the team with a .750 hitting percentage.
  • Justin Novoa handed out a game-high 27 assists.
  • Dougherty had a game-high three aces, Tim Flanagan and Brian Farrell added one each.
  • Aleks Melbardis had a team-high 11 kills while Tanner Stauffer added eight, Flanagan and O'Brien each had five.

  • Stevenson tabbed 28 block assists against Cal Lutheran, the most in a match since January 20, 2019 (32  against Benedictine).
  • The victory over No. 8 SUNY New Paltz was the Mustang's first victory over an AVCA ranked opponent since defeating No. 6 Rivier 3-1 (2/7/20).

Stevenson returns to action Saturday during the Slug Slam to face host-school UC Santa Cruz at 8:00 a.m. PST and Menlo College at 5:00 p.m. PST.
