No. 12 Mustangs Fall to No. 9 Christopher Newport in NCAA Second Round

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Ninth-ranked Christopher Newport scored eight second half goals while the 12th-ranked Stevenson men's lacrosse team was held to just two as the Captains defeated the Mustangs, 10-5, in the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Second Round Sunday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.

  • The Captains (12-5) scored the first goal of the game at the 9:23 mark, as Coby Auslander found a wide open Alex Brendes back-door for a quick release shot.
  • Just 1:09 later, junior Cam Leydig got the Mustangs (9-2) on the board with an unassisted goal in transition.
  • On the ensuing face-off, Stevenson was whistled for the first penalty of the game but senior Marc Poust made a save before classmate Matt Wilson forced a turnover.
  • Down the other end, junior Ryan Coleman scored an unassisted goal after running in and scoring on a bounce shot, giving the hosts its first lead with 6:27 remaining.
  • The Mustangs had their first man-up opportunity of the contest but did not get a shot off in the 30 seconds.

  • Christopher Newport was whistled for a holding penalty in the opening minute of the second quarter.
  • With two seconds left in the penalty, senior Jacob Tatum found junior Connor Nelson on the far post to extend Stevenson's lead to, 3-1.
  • After forcing a turnover just over midfield, team-leading scorer, Dylan Rice, was all alone against Poust, getting the Captains back within one.
  • The Mustangs killed off three 30-second penalties in the quarter, with Poust making two saves.
  • The two teams combined for 17 turnovers in the second quarter and 25 in the opening half.

  • On the first possession of the second half, the Captains tied the game at 3-3 as Brendes netted his second goal of the contest.
  • Christopher Newport reclaimed its lead at the 9:16 mark as Rice scored in transition off an assist from Ryan Young.
  • Senior John Harrington snapped a 21:12 scoreless streak for the Mustangs and tied the game at 4-4, scoring unassisted on a low shot inside the far left post.
  • On the ensuing possession, Brendes gave the Captains the lead once again, beating Poust on a bounce shot in front.
  • With 2:15 remaining, the Mustangs had a 30-second man-up advantage but Zac Hanway stuffed a quick turnaround shot in front by Tatum.
  • In the final 30 seconds of the quarter, Hanway once again made a point blank save, leading to a goal down the other end by Jackson Deal with three seconds remaining for a 6-4 lead.

  • Rice opened the fourth quarter scoring, netting an unassisted goal at the 12:53 mark to extend the Captains lead to three goals.
  • Nelson netted his second goal of the game, firing a shot up high, to snap a three-goal scoring streak by Christopher Newport and cut the deficit to two.
  • After forcing a turnover in their defensive zone, the Captains quickly got down the other end of the field to reclaim a three goal lead at the 10:10 mark.
  • Poust made back-to-back saves but Christopher Newport maintained possession, leading to a goal by Bradu Altobello, for a 9-5 lead, before Altobello scored two minutes later.

  • Christopher Newport outshot Stevenson, 47-31, and held a 41-31 edge in ground balls.
  • With the win, the Captains tie the all-time series at two wins a piece, including the second straight in the series.
  • Hanway finished with 12 saves for the visitors, including nine in the second half.
  • It is just the second game in 11 games this season, Stevenson has allowed double digit goals, both coming versus top-10 opponents.
  • The Mustangs fall to 19-11 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, including 17-6 at home and 15-11 versus ranked opponents.
  • Tatum finishes his career with a point in 51 of 54 career games after recording an assist.
  • For the seventh straight game, Poust recorded double digit saves, finishing with 15. He finishes ninth in program history with 299 career saves.
