STEVENSON, Md. - The Stevenson men's tennis team won its regular season finale over visiting Alvernia by a 9-0 score at the Stevenson Courts. The Mustangs finished its conference slate of matches with a 5-0 record, giving them the top seed in the upcoming MAC Commonwealth Championship tournament.
Senior Ray McDermott and junior Larry Johnson III improved their season record to 5-1 after defeating their No. 1 doubles oppenents by an 8-6 score. Senior Richie Abruscato and sophomore Ben Porto won their fourth match of the year in No. 2, 8-2. Senior James Waychoff and junior Lukas Sanidas shutout their No. 3 opponents, giving them their fifth win on the season.
McDermott cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win in No. 1 singles, giving him a regular season record of 7-1. Porto won in No. 2 by the same 6-1, 6-0 margin, which gave him his fifth victory of the year.
Johnson III moved his record above .500 (4-3) for the season with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph in No. 3, while Abruscato picked up his sixth win of the year in straight sets (6-1, 6-1).
Sanidas ends the regular season with a 7-1 record after his 6-1, 6-0 win, while Waychoff shutout his opponent, 6-0, 6-0, for his fifth victory on the year.
The Mustangs will compete next on Wednesday, May 5 in the MAC Commonwealth Semifinals against the winner of fifth-seeded Alvernia and fourth-seeded Eastern, who compete in Quarterfinal 1 on Monday, May 3. The semifinal match will be hosted by the Mustangs.
