Tatum Nets Five Goals as No. 13 Mustangs Down Widener, 16-9

CHESTER, Pa. - Stevenson men's lacrosse senior Jacob Tatum extended his point streak to 39 games with six points on five goals and one assist as the 13th-ranked Mustangs remained unbeaten with a 16-9 MAC Commonwealth victory over Widener Saturday afternoon at Hirschmann Field at Quick Stadium.

  • The Mustangs (5-0, 3-0 MAC Commonwealth) had a man-up advantage just 28 seconds into the contest after winning the opening face-off.
  • Just four seconds after the penalty expired, junior Josh Brannan gave the visitors an early lead on an assist from classmate Ryan Coleman.
  • Stevenson connected on its second man-up opportunity as Tatum scored with five seconds left in the man-advantage.
  • Junior Shane Ford nearly found the back of the net at the midway point of the opening quarter as his shot hit off the post.
  • The Pride (7-3, 4-3 MAC Commonwealth) had their first man-up opportunity with 2:59 remaining in the quarter with Mike Kala'l nearly scoring for the hosts as his shot hit off the crossbar.
  • With 1:37 remaining, senior Lewis Anania pushed the Mustangs lead to 3-0 with an unassisted score.
  • Stevenson fired a pair of shots on net in the final 19 seconds but both were saved by Carter Landry.

  • After winning the opening face-off the being the second quarter, Widener got on the board just 55 seconds in on a goal by Paz Gismondi.
  • The Mustangs answered on the very next possession as Tatum scored his second unassisted goal of the day.
  • Back-to-back goals by the Pride in a 1:01 span got the visitors withing one at the 9:36 mark.
  • Stevenson netted its second man-up goal of the game as junior Connor Nelson found the back of the net for the first time in the game, scoring unassisted.
  • Anania pushed the Mustangs lead back to three with 4:33 remaining before the Pride answered at the 3:11 mark to make it a 6-4 Stevenson lead at the half.

  • Following a turnover by each team to start the half, Widener got within one just 2:13 into the quarter.
  • The Pride won the ensuing face-off with senior Marc Poust making a save on the very next shot to keep the visitors lead at one.
  • Nelson found the back of the net for the second time on a helper by Tatum before Tatum scored just 1:10 later, pushing the Mustangs lead to 8-5.
  • Stevenson scored three goals in a 1:03 span with seniors John Harrington and Jacob Doster as well as Coleman all scoring their first of the day.
  • Widener scored back-to-back goals before Brannan ended the quarter with his second goal of the afternoon.

  • Harrington opened the fourth quarter scoring with an unassisted tally.
  • The Pride responded with a goal before Tatum answered with back-to-back scores on assists from junior Cam Leydig and Ford.
  • Each team scored once more, including the first of the day by Ford.

  • Stevenson outshot Widener, 47-33, and had a 32-20 advantage in ground balls.
  • The Mustangs won 18 of the 30 face-offs and finished 3-for-4 on man-up opportunities.
  • Tatum recorded his 14th career game with at least three goals and 11th with at least five points.
