Mustangs Take Two From Wilkes, Off To Best Start Since 2014

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Visiting Stevenson swept both ends of a Middle Atlantic Conference men's volleyball doubleheader from Wilkes by 3-0 scores Saturday afternoon at the Marts Center to remain unbeaten on the season.

  • Set scores were 25-9, 25-14, 25-16.
  • Leading 15-9 in the first set, Stevenson (4-0, 4-0 MAC) reeled off 10 straight points to close out the set.
  • Elliot De La Torre had three kills during the run while Logan Smiley had two.
  • The Mustangs scored the first three points in the second set and opened a 10-4 lead following a Tanner Stauffer kill.
  • Wilkes (0-4, 0-4 MAC) pulled within 10-6 but Stevenson responded 6-1 spurt to open a 17-7 lead.
  • In the third set a Smiley service ace opened an 11-3 Mustang run to start the match.
  • A Smiley block closed out the match.
  • Smiley hit .522 and totaled 14 kills and a pair of blocks.
  • De La Torre hit .583 and had eight kills with one error on 12 swings and added two blocks.
  • Stauffer tallied eight kills while Aidan O'Brien finished with six.
  • Mason Scott had a team-high 10 digs, while Grant Nelson handed out 26 assists and added four blocks.
  • The Mustangs hit .418 for the match while holding the Colonels to -.083 for the match.

  • Set scores were 25-12, 25-15, 25-10.
  • Stevenson led 8-6 in the first set when a Wilkes attack error three straight service aces by Smiley made it 12-6.
  • The Mustangs scored the last four points and a Stauffer kill closed things out.
  • Stevenson jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the second set with the opening run featuring two Smiley kills and a Derek Tangorra service ace.
  • The visitors again got out to a quick start in the third, leading 9-3.
  • Stevenson closed out the match on an 8-1 run.
  • Smiley again led the way, hitting .650 with 15 kills, five service aces and a pair of blocks.
  • Stauffer posted eight kills and seven digs.
  • Jack Hrvatin hit .636 on 11 swings with seven kills and no errors.  He added a pair of blocks and six digs.
  • Nelson handed out 29 assists and added three blocks.
  • Scott registered 12 digs, while Michael Dougherty notched six.
  • Stevenson hit .384 as a unit and held Wilkes to .013 hitting.

  • At 4-0, Stevenson is off to its best start since 2014.
  • The Mustangs extended their win streak dating back to last season to seven matches. 

  • Stevenson hosts Messiah on Wednesday, March 10 at 7 pm at Owings Mills Gym in an early battle of MAC unbeatens, as the Falcons will enter with a 6-0 record.
