Mustangs, Knights Halve Key MAC Doubleheader

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - No. 15 Stevenson and Arcadia split a Middle Atlantic Conference men's volleyball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Owings Mills Gymnasium.  The Knights swept the Mustangs 3-0 in the opener before Stevenson took down a 3-1 win in the second match.

  • Set scores were 25-22, 25-23, 25-22.
  • Stevenson (10-3, 10-3 MAC) trailed 17-14 in the first set before four straight points capped by back-to-back Aleks Melbardis kills put the Mustangs up 18-17.
  • Arcadia (9-3, 9-3 MAC) used a 3-0 spurt to go up 23-21.
  • After Stevenson made it 23-22 on an Elliot De La Torre kill the Knights scored the final two points to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Mustangs were down 23-20 in the second before three straight points capped by a Logan Smiley kill tied the set 23-23, but Arcadia responded with the final two points.
  • Arcadia led 16-11 in the third before a 5-1 Mustang run made it 17-16 on a block by De La Torre and Smiley.
  • The Knights extended the lead to four, 22-18, but a final Mustang push made it 23-22 on a Melbardis kill before Arcadia closed out the match.
  • Melbardis hit .400 and racked up 12 kills, five digs and three blocks.  
  • Smiley notched 11 kills and four digs, while Tanner Stauffer added nine kills.
  • De La Torre had six kills and four blocks.
  • Grant Nelson racked up 39 assists and had a team-best eight digs as did Stauffer and Mason Scott.
  • Arcadia hit .363 for the match while the Mustangs hit .253.
  • The match saw 30 ties and nine lead changes, with the lead changing hands three times in each set.

  • Set scores were 25-18, 20-25, 25-23, 25-21.
  • Stevenson jumped out to an early 4-2 lead and extended the lead to 16-8 on a Smiley kill.
  • Arcadia cut the lead to three, 18-15, but the Mustangs scored seven of the final 10 points and another Smiley kill closed the set.
  • The Knights led 21-15 in the second set before three Mustang points made it 21-18 on a block by Aidan O'Brien.
  • Leading 22-19, Arcadia scored three out of the final four points to tie the match.
  • Stevenson jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the third set that included back-to-back service aces by Nelson.
  • The Mustangs took their largest lead, 17-9, before Arcadia crawled back to within one, 24-23.
  • A Melbardis kill closed out the set.
  • The hosts trailed 17-15 in the fourth before a 5-1 run gave them a 20-18 lead after a Nelson ace.
  • Arcadia cut the lead to one twice, but with Stevenson leading 23-21, Melbardis put down back-to-back kills to end the match.
  • Smiley hit .400 and tallied 26 kills and eight digs.
  • Melbardis totaled 19 kills and seven blocks.
  • Tyler Aiello recorded seven kills and nine digs.
  • O'Brien had eight total blocks and notched five kills.
  • Nelson posted 49 assists, with Michael Dougherty making a team-best 13 digs.
  • Stevenson hit .323 in the second match and Arcadia hit .305.
  • The Mustangs racked up 12 blocks in the match, a season high.

  • The loss in the first match snapped an 18-match home win streak dating back to 2019.  That loss was also to Arcadia.
  • Smiley extended his streak of matches with at least 10 kills to 16.
  • With one week remaining in the regular season, Stevenson and Arcadia, along with Stevens, are tied in the MAC standings with three losses.  Stevenson is 10-3 while Arcadia is 9-3 and Stevens 8-3.  Messiah leads the conference at 11-2.

  • The Mustangs host Stevens for Senior Night on Wednesday at 7 pm at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
