No. 14 Mustangs Bounce Back With Two Victories Over Alvernia

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The No. 14 Stevenson men's volleyball team rebounded from its first setback of the season Wednesday night with a doubleheader sweep of Alvernia in Middle Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Owings Mills Gymnasium.  The Mustangs were 3-0 winners in the opener then battled for a 3-1 win in the second match of the day.

  • Set scores were 25-17, 25-15, 25-17.
  • Stevenson (9-1, 9-1 MAC) clung to a 17-16 lead in the first set before closing the set on an 8-1 run.
  • Logan Smiley had three kills during the run, while Aleks Melbardis had two.
  • The Mustangs jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set against Alvernia (5-5, 5-5) and never trailed.
  • In the third set, the hosts took control with an 8-0 run that made it 23-13 after back-to-back service aces by Tyler Aiello.
  • A Smiley kill closed out the match.
  • Smiley totaled 19 kills and no errors on 38 swings.
  • Melbardis, making his season debut, notched eight kills, while Aiello and Aidan O'Brien had six apiece.
  • Michael Dougherty recorded 22 digs.
  • Grant Nelson notched 35 assists and 11 digs.
  • Stevenson hit .357 for the match while limiting the Golden Wolves to .029 hitting.

  • Set scores were 25-19, 25-17, 24-26, 29-27.
  • Stevenson led 19-18 in the first set before scoring six of the final seven points, with a Melbardis kill closing things out.
  • The Mustangs never trailed in the second set and opened things up with a 6-0 run capped by a Nelson service ace that made it 16-8.
  • In the third, Alvernia led 24-22 and was serving for the set but kills by Melbardis and Nelson tied things 24-24.
  • AU bounced back with back-to-back kills by Caleb Whitehead to stay alive.
  • In the fourth, Alvernia led 24-21 and was serving to force a fifth set before two kills by Melbardis and one by Jack Hrvatin tied the set 24-24.
  • The Golden Wolves took three straight one-point leads, but each time the Mustangs came up with a side out to stay alive in the set.
  • After an Alvernia attack error tied the set 27-27, an Aiello kill followed by a Smiley kill closed out the match and completed the sweep.
  • Smiley racked up 24 kills and six digs.
  • Melbardis hit .452 and registered 19 kills, one shy of his career high, and also posted a pair of blocks.
  • Aiello narrowly missed a double-double with 10 kills and nine digs.
  • Nelson tallied 51 assists and added six blocks and five digs.
  • Dougherty recorded 20 digs.
  • Stevenson hit .291 in the nightcap while the Golden Wolves hit .196.

  • Stevenson extended its home win streak to 18 matches dating back to 2019.
  • Smiley has recorded double-digit kills in 13 straight matches going back to the abbreviated 2020 campaign.
  • The Mustangs improved to 10-0 against Alvernia all-time.

  • Stevenson is back in action next Wednesday, traveling to Stevens for a 7 pm Middle Atlantic Conference contest.
