Mustangs Remain Undefeated, Sweep Misericordia

DALLAS, Pa. - The Stevenson University men's volleyball team remained unbeaten by posting a pair of 3-1 victories over Misericordia Saturday afternoon at the Anderson Center in Middle Atlantic Conference action.

  • Set scores were 19-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-16.
  • Misericordia (3-6, 3-6 MAC) took control of the first set with four straight points to make it 17-11.
  • The Cougars jumped out to a 6-1 lead in set number two.
  • Stevenson (7-0, 7-0 MAC) used five straight points capped by a Logan Smiley kill to tie the set 15-15.
  • The Mustangs scored eight of the final nine points to win going away.  Seven straight points capped by a Tanner Stauffer kill put the guests up 24-17.
  • Stevenson led 19-16 in the third set before recording six of the final seven points, with a block by Stauffer and Aidan O'Brien closing things out.
  • Leading 14-12, the Mustangs gradually pulled away in the fourth, with a Smiley kill ending the match.
  • Smiley recorded 21 kills on .410 hitting.
  • O'Brien totaled 13 kills and five block assists, with Stauffer adding 10 kills.
  • Elliot De La Torre contributed nine kills and four blocks.
  • Grant Nelson notched 43 assists and nine digs.
  • Mason Scott matched Nelson for the team lead with nine digs.
  • Stevenson hit .371 for the match, with the Cougars hitting at a .206 clip.

  • Set scores were 29-27, 21-25, 25-11, 25-23.
  • In the first set, Misericordia led 23-22 before an attack error and a Smiley service ace put the Mustangs up 24-23.
  • The Cougars staved off set point four straight points before a Smiley kill and a De La Torre service ace closed out the set.
  • Stevenson trailed 22-21 in the second before Misericordia reeled off three straight points to take the set and tie the match
  • The Mustangs led 14-11 in the third before scoring 11 straight points with Nelson serving.  Smiley had a pair of kills in the set-deciding run.
  • In the fourth, a De La Torre kill put Stevenson up 24-22, and after Misericordia staved off match point, another De La Torre closed the match and the sweep.
  • Smiley posted a season-high 26 kills and added seven digs.
  • Stauffer notched 12 kills and 17 digs, while O'Brien added nine kills and five blocks.
  • Nelson racked up 48 assists and recorded five blocks.
  • Michael Dougherty finished with 12 digs.
  • Stevenson hit .221 for the match, while the Cougars hit .170.

  • At 7-0, Stevenson is off to its best start since 2011, when the Mustangs also started off 7-0.
  • Smiley has recorded at least 14 kills in all seven matches to date and had recorded double-digit kills in 10 straight matches dating back to last season.
  • Stevenson improved to 6-0 all-time against Misericordia.

  • Stevenson wraps up its two-game series with No. 15 Messiah on Wednesday at 7 pm on the road.
