Three Reach Double Figures, Mustangs Pick Up First Win of Season at Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. - The Stevenson men's basketball team placed three players in double figures, paced by junior McKale Williams' 24 points, as the Mustangs picked up their first win of the season with an 89-86 triumph at Messiah Saturday night at Hitchcock Arena.

  • Stevenson (1-3, 1-3 MAC Commonwealth) trailed just once early at 2-0 and opened up a 15-9 lead 7:15 into the game following a Jalin Jordan basket.
  • With Messiah (1-3, 1-3) trailing by two, 27-25, an 8-0 Mustang run capped by a three by Williams gave the guests a 10-point cushion with 4:57 remaining before intermission.
  • A quick 7-2 spurt by the Falcons halved the lead to five, 37-32, with 3:58 left.
  • The Mustangs responded with five quick points of their own to take a 42-32 lead with 3:00 on the clock on a Jordan trifecta.
  • Messiah chipped away and cut the lead to four, 47-43, at the break.

  • A three by Messiah's EJ Porter 15 seconds into the second half cut the Mustang lead to one.
  • Stevenson used a 10-0 run capped by two free throws by Evan Joseph to take a 57-46 lead with 17 minutes remaining.
  • The Mustangs continued to extend the lead with what became a 23-4 run and went up 70-50 after Cameron Sapienza made 1-of-2 at the line with 12:19 to go.
  • Stevenson took its largest lead, 74-52, with 10:23 left on an Ethan Jones layup.
  • Messiah whittled the lead down to 12, 77-65, with 7:23 left on a putback by Jack Ramsey.
  • With 4:48 left, a dunk by Bo Wesley put the Mustangs up 17, 86-69.
  • Trailing 89-73 with 1:56 left, Messiah scored 13 straight points to pull within three on a Cam Carter basket with seven seconds left.
  • The Mustangs missed the front end of a one-and-one after he was fouled and Messiah grabbed the rebound, but did not get a potential game-tying shot up as it turned the ball over on its final possession.

  • Williams finished 9-18 from the floor, including 6-12 behind the arc, and also finished with seven rebounds.
  • Wesley registered his first career double-double, scoring a career-high 14 points on 6-8 shooting while grabbing 10 rebounds, matching his career high set in the season opener against Widener.
  • Joseph totaled 11 points on 4-6 shooting while adding four assists, three rebounds, a pair of steals and no turnovers.
  • Jordan and Sapienza each added nine points off the bench, while Merlon Devine contributed eight points and eight rebounds.
  • Stevenson shot 51.5% from the floor, including 53.3% over the final 20 minutes, and knocked down 11 of its 32 three-point attempts.
  • Messiah was 7-10 behind the arc in the first half and 10-19 for the game, but shot 44.4% overall.
  • The Mustangs outrebounded Messiah for the second straight night, this time by a 44-36 margin.
  • Stevenson held a 19-4 advantage in fast break points.

  • The Mustangs are slated to face MAC Commonwealth newcomer Eastern in a home-and-home series next week, starting with a road game at St. Davids, Pa. on Thursday at 7 pm.
