Mustangs Return To The Court, Fall to Widener

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Visiting Widener University opened up a 49-42 halftime lead and never trailed in the second half, posting an 83-67 MAC Commonwealth men's basketball victory over Stevenson University Thursday evening at Owings Mills Gymnasium.  The game was the season opener for both schools.

  • A three-pointer by sophomore Jalin Jordan put Stevenson up 3-0 36 seconds into the game.
  • Widener, trailing 7-2, used a 16-4 spurt to build an 18-11 lead on a Pat Holden three at the 13:23 mark.
  • A free throw by Merlon Devine pulled the Mustangs within three, 23-20, with 9:26 left in the first half.
  • The Pride opened their lead up to 11, 35-24, with just under six minutes left before intermission.
  • A 9-1 run capped by a Jordan three and a layup by Damon Koskovich pulled the hosts within three, 36-33, with 3:50 on the clock.
  • Widener countered with an 11-3 run of its own to push the lead back to 11 with 1:45 left.
  • Back-to-back Jordan threes made it 47-42 with 1:09 on the clock.
  • Widener took a 49-42 lead into the break.

  • A layup by KJ Holton pulled Stevenson within five 35 seconds into the second half.
  • A 10-2 run by the Pride put the guests up by 13, 59-46, with just over 15 minutes remaining.
  • A fast-break dunk by Ray Nedurumalli with 11:31 to go capped a 5-0 spurt and put the Mustangs within eight, 64-56.
  • Widener scored the game's next 10 points to build an 18-point cushion with 7:37 remaining.
  • The Pride took their largest lead, 80-60, with 5:24 left on a Jared Peters three.
  • Stevenson scored seven straight points to pull within 13, 80-67, with just over two minutes left on a Darius Webb free throw.

  • 12 of the 15 players who saw action for Stevenson reached the scoring column.
  • Jordan totaled all 16 of his points in the first half, knocking down four three-pointers.
  • Holton tallied nine points, while McKale Williams finished with six.
  • Bo Wesley grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds and also recorded four blocked shots, matching his career high in that category.
  • Stevenson shot 36.4% overall and was 7-26 behind the arc, while the Pride shot 52.9% in the opening stanza and 48.4% for the contest.  Widener connected on 10 of its 24 three-point attempts.
  • The guests held a 49-37 rebounding advantage.
  • The Mustangs forced 26 Widener turnovers and recorded nine steals, their most in a game since February 27, 2019 against Rutgers Newark when they finished with 12.
  • Peters led five Widener players in double figures with 15 points.

  • Stevenson and Widener meet again Friday night at Widener's Schwartz Center in Chester, Pa.  That game is set for a 7 pm tip.
