Mustangs Stymied in Second Half at Lebanon Valley

Box Score

ANNVILLE, Pa. -- Stevenson men's basketball whittled its first-half deficit to just one, but could not sustain the surge as Lebanon Valley pulled away for a 71-54 win in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth play on Wednesday night.

Lebanon Valley (5-4, 2-1 MAC Commonwealth) received a stellar effort from Evin Timochenko, who poured in a career-high 28 points (12-18 FG) with seven rebounds and two blocks. Zach Tucker added 18 points, eight assists and four steals for LVC, which posted 37 points in the second half.

Stevenson (6-3, 1-2 MAC Commonwealth) placed three in double digits, including a team-high 13 points from Cameron Smith. Khalil Richard and Ronald Ayers added 12 points apiece for the Mustangs, which went just 4-of-23 from three-point range on the night.

  • Both sides got on the board during their first trip down the floor before the Mustangs eventually raced ahead for a 7-2 edge with consecutive scores. Lebanon Valley relied on Evin Timochenko early as the first-year forward posted the initial seven points of the evening for the hosts, knotting the score with 16:32 remaining.
  • Bo Wesley converted through contact for an inside bucket, but LVC responded with a trey late in the shot clock as both sides traded early baskets. Off a long rebound, Smith stepped into a triple from the far wing, but again the Dutchmen raced ahead for a quick chance off a make, forcing a Mustang timeout down 19-18.
  • Following a Smith jumper, LVC canned a three on the next possession for a 24-20 lead. Both sides endured a scoreless drought that spanned around two minutes until the Dutchmen expanded their lead with a layin at 8:37.
  • LVC pushed its run to a 9-2 margin as the Mustang scoreless stretch ticked over five minutes of game action. Richard created an offensive chance for the visitors with a pull-up jumper, trimming the LVC lead to 30-24, later scoring inside during the next offensive possession.
  • With less than one second left in the opening half, Nate Arrington made a bucket through contact before adding the foul shot to trim the halftime deficit to 34-33. Despite the earlier scoring drought, Stevenson unspooled a quick 7-0 surge over the final 1:25 to end the frame with momentum down by just one.

  • Stevenson looked out of sync on offense to begin the second half as LVC pulled ahead at 39-33 with a pair of buckets. After LVC stuck an open trey, Ayers snared the offensive rebound and converted the and-one play as Stevenson trailed 41-36.
  • Scoring continued to be a challenge for the Mustangs, which could not sink some quality looks early in the half. LVC notched eight consecutive points, part of a larger 15-3 run for a double-digit lead at 49-36.
  • Smith ended an extended scoreless stretch for the Mustangs with a move in the paint before Ayers scored along the left block off a steal, slicing the LVC lead to 51-40. The Dutchmen continued to hold a double-figure advantage as Zach Tucker drilled a triple for a 60-42 lead.
  • Jalen Jacox swirled home a three-pointer before LVC countered with a three of its own with the shot clock expiring as Timochenko sunk his first shot beyond the arc this season. Ayers scored along the low block, turning up the defensive pressure and forcing a quick turnover, trailing 65-50.
  • The Dutchmen went over five minutes without a basket, but the Mustangs were unable to close much ground over that span with the clock ticking towards the two-minute mark. LVC melted the clock away to preserve the conference victory.

  • Showcasing their balance on offense, all five Stevenson starters recorded a basket just over six minutes into the contest. Both sides were shooting over 50% from the floor midway through the opening half before the pace and scoring slowed.
  • A 9-2 Lebanon Valley run that spanned over seven minutes in the opening half pushed the hosts ahead by eight as both sides went cold on the offensive end. Richard took charge for the Mustangs offensively in the latter stages of the first half, converting three consecutive shots.
  • Stevenson registered just three assists in the second half on nine made baskets.
  • Arrington pulled down six rebounds in the opening half to lead the Mustangs on the evening.
  • LVC shot nearly 57% from the floor in the second half on its way to outscoring the Mustangs by a 37-21 margin in the final 20 minutes.
  • LVC was without leading scorer Collin Jones, who missed the contest due to injury after starting all eight contests prior to Wednesday.
  • Stevenson has dropped five of the last six games in the series, snagging a road win inside Sorrentino Gymnasium against the Dutchmen last March.

  • Stevenson: The Mustangs are back home on Saturday, December 11, welcoming Eastern to Owings Mills Gymnasium at 3:00 p.m.
  • Lebanon Valley: The Dutchmen host Messiah on Saturday, December 11 at 3:00 p.m.
