Mustangs Drop Friday Clash With Manhattanville

REISTERSTOWN, Md. -- Playing from behind most of the afternoon, Stevenson men's hockey pressed forward late in a 5-3 loss to Manhattanville in UCHC play on Friday. 

Stevenson (3-2-1, 2-2 UCHC) surrendered an early goal on the penalty kill, rallying to tie the score three times and holding the edge in shots, before Manhattanville (4-2, 4-1 UCHC) pulled away in the third. Brendan Rylott paced the Mustangs with a goal and assist, while Marko Sturma posted 15 saves in his first start of the season. 

  • Following an early boarding penalty on the Mustangs, Manhattanville cashed in as Raymond Speerbrecker found the back of the net to place the visitors ahead, 1-0. 
  • Mac Lowry snapped home the equalizer less than one minute later, converting the goal off assists from Evan Beers and Ryan Patrick
  • Stevenson owned possession, hemming the Valiants in their defensive zone over the next few minutes. Sturma responded with a pair of saves, but the Valiants moved in front off a goal from Troy Crosson at 12:13. 
  • Sturma made two more saves for the Mustangs as the Valiants took the 2-1 lead into the locker room. 

  • The Valiants possessed the puck early in the second before the Mustangs ripped a pair of attempts into the paraphernalia of goalie Tyler Roy. 
  • Stevenson built momentum off a penalty kill, later tying the game off a shot from Rylott at 6:35. Graeme McCrory notched the assist on the tying goal as Stevenson answered back.
  • Manhattanville ripped three chances on the power play that were blocked, eventually finding the back of the net at 9:53 off the stick of Artem Mateichenko. 
  • Alex Rivet buried the game-tying marker, with assists going to Rylott and McCrory, at 16:23 into the period. 
  • Austin Master had two chances for the Mustangs, sending them wide as the second-period clock ticked away. 

  • Following a big push from the Mustangs, the Valiants moved in front, icing the game with an empty-netter. 
  • Stevenson pulled the goalie in search of the equalizer, but could not solve the Manhattanville defense. 

  • Manhattanville went 2-for-3 on the power play, keying the Valiants' fourth-straight win. 
  • Stevenson outshot the Valiants, 34-20, including a 10-4 edge in the third period alone. 
  • The Mustangs had three different goal scorers on Friday. 
  • Sturma made 19 saves in his season debut for the Mustangs.
