Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Stevenson men's basketball withstood a second-half push from Gallaudet, holding off the Bison for a 63-54 triumph in the nation's capital.
Stevenson (3-1) nabbed its third win in a row, picking up a victory in the first road clash of the season. Meanwhile, Gallaudet (0-2) dropped its first home game in over 600 days.
Richard notched a team-high 15 points on 7-of-14 shooting, while Davon Jones added 10 points for the Mustangs. Bo Wesley just missed out on a double-double with nine points and 10 boards for Stevenson, which shot 42.3% from the floor.
Rory Lewis pumped in 18 points for the hosts as Corey Smith added 12 more points off the bench.
- Khalil Richard got the scoring started for the Mustangs on their second trip up the floor as both teams took some time to settle in. Cameron Smith stepped in front of a pass, racing ahead for a dunk to double the lead at 4-0 with 17:19 showing on the first-half clock.
- Following a triple from Davon Jones, the Mustangs drew an offensive foul, with Smith stepping in to take the charge. It was all part of an 11-2 run for the Mustangs to open the contest.
- The pace began to quicken as both teams struggled to take care of the ball. Midway through the opening half, Stevenson led 10-4, adding to it with a nifty finish from Richard in the paint.
- The Bison trimmed the deficit to one possession following a three-pointer with just about eight minutes left in the frame before Mustangs canned a three of their own in response, pushing the edge back to 16-10.
- Off an offensive rebound, Bo Wesley regathered for a layup in traffic, ballooning the Mustang lead to 10 points at 20-10. From the left side, Davon Jones stuck an open three for a 27-12 edge.
- Stevenson continued to outpace Gallaudet, before the Bison sunk a three with time expiring in the opening half. Stevenson took a 34-21 lead into the intermission.
- Gallaudet slowly whittled the Stevenson lead to six with just under 14 minutes in the half. The Mustangs used several offensive rebounds to eventually add to their lead at the line, but a fastbreak hoop from the Bison prompted a timeout at 12:53.
- Stevenson remained in front, but the sloppy play continued for both sides, with turnovers plaguing the game. The Mustang lead hovered just under double figures, including a nice response bucket from Ethan Jones, working the edge back to eight at 49-41. Moments later, Richard stopped and popped from 10 feet out for a 51-41 advantage.
- Charging back ahead, Gallaudet converted a layup through contact while converting the and-one free throw attempt to make it 54-46. Another basket through contact brought the Bison to within five with 3:30 remaining before the Mustangs followed up consecutive stops and a Wesley foul shot for a 56-50 lead.
- Wesley pivoted in the paint for a clutch basket out of the timeout, making it 58-52 in favor of the Mustangs. On the defensive end, Stevenson pulled down the rebound off a long three-point attempt.
- Richard dribbled through the Gallaudet press, converting at the rim for a 61-54 lead with just 37 ticks showing on the clock. KJ Holton tossed in two foul shots, extending the lead to 63-54.
- The Mustangs have limited each of their first four opponents to under 60 points this season.
- Both sides combined for 53 turnovers on the night.
- Stevenson again showcased balance in the scoring department as five players posted six points or more.
- Richard had 10 of his team-high 15 points in the opening half, helping the Mustangs mount a double-digit lead.
- Nate Arrington had his first collegiate game with 10 rebounds on Wednesday.
- Stevenson continued its stout defensive ways in the early going of Wednesday's contest, limiting Goucher to just two points over the first six and a half minutes. That defensive intensity included multiple steals, a drawn charge and a shot clock violation.
- Both squads fell to Catholic in the 2021-22 season opener, with the Mustangs dropping a narrow 57-55 decision to the Cardinals. Meanwhile, the Bison came up short in a 68-60 loss to Catholic the following week.
