Mustangs Stifle Keystone in Resounding Saturday Triumph

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- All 12 Stevenson men's basketball players that saw the floor figured into the scoring as the Mustangs clamped down in the second half as part of an 87-39 rout of Keystone on Saturday night inside Owings Mills Gymnasium.

Fully understanding the task at hand, Stevenson (2-1) limited Keystone (2-3) to just one three-pointer in the second half. Meanwhile, the Mustangs received a team-high 15 points from Ethan Jones, 13 more from Khalil Richard and 12 from Davon Jones

  • Things were back and forth to start, but a 10-0 spurt from the Mustangs lifted the hosts to a 15-8 advantage.
  • Cameron Smith and Richard each had three-point shots in the early run before Stevenson jumped ahead 25-14 on a Jalen Jacox triple.
  • Jack Anderson accounted for 16 of the Giants' first 21 points until the Mustangs adjusted, holding the sharpshooter off the scoresheet for the remainder of the night.
  • Bo Wesley turned aside a Marcus Bauman layup in the middle of the paint as the Mustangs worked ahead in transition, moving the ball quickly before Cameron Sapienza dumped a pass back to an open Jones for three and a 38-21 advantage.
  • Ronald Ayers finished off a Nate Arrington pass for the final bucket of the opening half as Stevenson took a 41-20 lead into the locker room.

  • The Mustangs used a 10-2 run early in the second half as they doubled up the Giants at 50-25. Jones capped the run with a three, coming off an offensive rebound and kick-out pass from Cameron Smith
  • Stevenson surrendered just one point to Keystone from the 15:57 mark to 10:41, working its lead to 60-32.
  • The Mustangs hit the offensive glass throughout the second half, including a stretch where Drew Miller pulled down three as Arrington finished the long sequence with a lay-in at 8:05.
  • Stevenson stayed in front, beginning to work its bench into the lineup. Miller swiped a steal, charging down for a fast-break bucket and an 82-36 advantage.

  • Stevenson shot 47.1% from the floor as a team, holding a big edge in points in the paint (38-14), second-chance points (16-2), fast-break points (13-1) and bench points (35-6).
  • Keystone used a big offensive surge while erasing a 13-point second-half deficit on Friday against Goucher. Saturday was a different story, as the lone three in the second half came with just over one minute remaining.
  • Cameron Sapienza was active in multiple facets on Saturday, snaring nine rebounds with six assists and a steal.
  • Stevenson did not have a player exceed 25 minutes on Saturday, utilizing the bench in the latter stages of the second half.
  • While Jones had 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting, he was a +34 on the night.
  • Stevenson racked up 20 offensive rebounds, almost as many as Keystone (22) had for the game. This inside dominance was thanks in large part to the contributions of Wesley and Arrington, who split time in the low block.
  • The Mustangs assisted on over 75% of their made baskets on Saturday, handing out 25 helpers on 33 makes.
  • Stevenson is the lone men's team in the Tip-Off Tournament field to win both its contests.

  • Stevenson: The Mustangs hit the road for the first time this season, visiting Gallaudeton Wednesday, November 17 at 7:00 PM.
  • Keystone: The Giants square off with NCAA DI opponent VMI on Tuesday, November 16.
