Mustangs Remain Unbeaten at Home, Down Cal Lutheran

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson University men's volleyball team improved to 6-0 at Owings Mills Gymnasium and extended its home win streak to 13 matches with a 3-1 non-conference win over Cal Lutheran Friday evening.  Set scores were 25-17, 21-25, 25-21, 25-17.

  • Stevenson (11-5) built an early 7-2 lead after a Kyle Bosko block and a Cal Lutheran (8-12) attack error.
  • A Bosko kill extended the Mustang advantage to 16-9.
  • Cal Lutheran cut the lead to five three times, the last at 21-16, but Logan Smiley's kill, followed by a Smiley service ace, made it 23-16.
  • A Kingsmen attack error closed out the first set.

  • The Kingsmen scored four straight points to take an early 7-3 advantage.
  • After CLU increased its lead to 10-4, four straight Mustang points capped by a Smiley ace made it 10-8.
  • Leading 21-19, Cal Lutheran scored back-to-back points to claim a four-point cushion.
  • Back-to-back kills by Tanner Stauffer and Aleks Melbardis again made it a two-point set.
  • The guests took advantage of two Mustang attack errors to tie the match.

  • The third set saw five ties before Cal Lutheran eked out a 12-10 lead.
  • After a Garrett Weigel kill, Smiley rattled off three straight service aces to put Stevenson back in front, 14-12.
  • Leading 17-15, the Mustangs reeled off four consecutive points to build a 21-15 advantage.
  • A 6-3 run by the Kingsmen cut the Mustang lead in half.
  • A kill by Smiley put Stevenson in front 2-1.

  • A block by Bosko and Weigel, followed by a CLU attack error, put the Mustangs on top 8-4.
  • The Kingsmen chopped the lead to one, 10-9, on three straight points.
  • Stevenson responded with three straight of its own to go up 13-9 on a block by Melbardis and Nate Reynolds.
  • Leading 17-14, three straight points, capped by a Melbardis service ace, made it a 20-14 Mustang lead.
  • Reynolds and Melbardis combined for a block for the final point of the match.

  • Stevenson hit .265 for the match while holding the Kingsmen to .175 hitting.
  • The Mustangs placed three figures in double figures in kills, paced by Smiley's 18.  He hit .239 for the match and also had five service aces and eight digs.
  • Melbardis posted 12 kills and added 23 assists and five blocks.
  • Stauffer hit .391 and notched 11 kills, 13 digs and four service aces, with Reynolds registering seven kills and five blocks.
  • Peyton Ranck recorded 29 assists.
  • Derek Tangorra posted nine digs.
  • Stevenson had a season-high 10 service aces in the win.

  • Stevenson returns to Middle Atlantic Conference play Wednesday, traveling to Messiah for a 7 pm contest.
  • The Mustangs host fourth-ranked Dominican (Ill.) on Thursday, March 12 at 7 pm at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
