Smiley, Melbardis Lead Mustangs to Straight Sets Win Over Alvernia

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's volleyball juniors Logan Smiley and Aleks Melbardis combined for 23 kills as the Mustangs posted a straight sets victory over Alvernia in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Wednesday evening at Owings Mills Gymnasium. Set scores were 25-21, 25-16, 25-18.

  • The opening set was a back and forth affair, featuring 14 ties and six lead changes.
  • The Mustangs (10-5, 2-1 MAC) jumped out to a 5-2 lead before the Golden Wolves rattled off four straight points for their first lead.
  • Stevenson won the final three points of the set, including a service ace by Smiley on set point.

  • The second set started much like the first with the Mustangs taking control and winning six consecutive points to take a 14-7 lead.
  • Melbardis and junior Nate Reynolds combined for a pair of block assists, including the second to take a 17-8 advantage.
  • The Golden Wolves went on a 5-1 run late in the set but the deficit was too large as the hosts won three of the final four points.
  • Sophomore Tanner Stauffer had a kill to earn set point before Alvernia recorded its eighth attack error of the set.

  • Melbardis won the first five points for the Mustangs in the third set on three kills and two service aces.
  • Alvernia went on a 7-3 run to get within one points but that would be as close as the visitors would get as Melbardis stopped the run with a kill.
  • Three straight attack errors by the Golden Wolves set up match point for the hosts, which Smiley would put down two points later.

  • Stevenson hit .290 for the match, including a game-best .379 in the third set.
  • Melbardis finished with 11 kills, 15 assists, four digs, three service aces, and two block assists.
  • Meanwhile, Smiley recorded a match-high 12 kills while adding four digs, one service ace, and one block assist.
  • Senior Derek Tangorra totaled 15 digs while classmate Kyle Bosko had four kills, two solo blocks, and one block assist.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Friday, March 6 when the Mustangs host a non-conference contest versus Cal Lutheran beginning at 6:00 p.m.
