No. 12 Mustangs Upset by Rutgers-Newark in Four

NEWARK, N.J. - The Stevenson men's volleyball team hit a season-low .170 as the 12th-ranked Mustangs were upset by Rutgers-Newark Thursday evening at The Golden Dome Athletic Cetner. Set scores were 25-20, 22-25, 23-25, 14-25.

  • The third attack error by the Mustangs (7-3) gave the hosts an 11-5 lead as Rutgets-Newark led for the majority of the opening set.
  • Stevenson rallied to tie the set at, 16-16, after back-to-back kills by junior Nate Reynolds.
  • An attack error by the Raiders (4-0) gave the visitors just its second lead of the set but one it would not relinquish.
  • Junior Logan Smiley had three kills to win three of the next four points for the Mustangs.
  • Stevenson won the final three points on the set, including a kill by senior Kyle Bosko.

  • The Mustangs jumped out to a, 6-4, lead before the hosts went on a, 7-1, run with the lone Stevenson point coming on a service error.
  • Trailing, 20-16, Stevenson won five straight points, including back-to-back kills by Renolds, to take a 21-20 lead.
  • But the Raiders won five of the final six points to tie the match at one set apiece.

  • Rutgers-Newark went on a, 14-6, run to take a, 20-15, lead in the set.
  • Down two set points, the Mustangs won back-to-back points on errors by the Raiders before the hosts closed the set with a set error by Stevenson.

  • Bosko opened the set with a kill to give the Mustangs an early lead but the visitors would not extend their lead past one.
  • The Raiders won six straight points to open a, 13-6, lead.
  • A kill by Smiley started a short, 3-1, run for Stevenson but that would be as close as it would get.

  • It was the fourth straight four-set match for the Mustangs who are, 4-2, in four-set matches this season.
  • Bosko finished with 10 kills for the second straight match while also adding three block assists.
  • Sophomore Tanner Stauffer recorded five kills and a team-high 11 digs.
  • Reynolds totaled eight kills, tying his season-high, while adding three block assists.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Friday, February 7 when the Mustangs face No. 6 Rivier in the Hall of Fame Classic hosted by Springfield beginning at 8:00 p.m.
  • The Mustangs return home on Saturday, Feburary 15 when the team opens Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) play versus Widener beginning at 2:00 p.m.
