Mustangs Force Mini-Game in UCHC Semifinal Series, Fall in First Sudden-Victory Period

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The third-seeded Stevenson men's hockey team forced a mini-game in game two of its UCHC semifinal series against second-seeded Wilkes with a 3-2 win, but the Colonels advanced to next weekend's conference championship series with a 1-0 win 2:56 into the overtime of the mini-game.

  • The Colonels (19-8) recorded the game's first three shots on net before earning the first power play of the contest at the 3:47 mark.
  • Wilkes fired just one shot on net during the man advantage, which was knocked aside by freshman Ryan Kenny.
  • The Mustangs (18-8-2) answered with the next five shots and eight of the next ten.
  • At the 12:28 mark, Stevenson went on its first power play attempt with seniors Christian Ripley and Dominic Brenza each putting a shot on net.
  • Just 1:37 after their first power play ended, the Mustangs went back on the man advantage with Michael Paterson-Jones stopping the lone shot by junior Houston Wilson.
  • The Colonels went on their second power play with seven seconds remaining in the period, which carried over into the second period.

  • Stevenson successfully killed off its second penalty kill behind a pair of saves by Kenny.
  • At the 3:30 mark, the Colonels took a 1-0 lead, as Tyson Araujo tipped down a shot from Ryan Solomon at the point.
  • Just 31 seconds later, freshman Austin Master tied the game after a centering pass from behind the net from sophomore Ryan Patrick.
  • Wilkes went on the power play at the 3:48 mark and needed just 37 seconds before reclaiming the lead.
  • The Mustangs went back on the power play at the 6:32 mark but a shot by senior Nick Gray was stopped by Paterson-Jones.
  • Just 24 seconds after the visitors power play ended, the Colonels went on the power play but it was cut short after a slashing penalty by the hosts.
  • Back on even strength, freshman Chris Lee tied the game at two goals a piece at the 12:44 mark. Senior Bruce Stachitas sent the puck down the Brenza who centered it to Lee for a backhander.
  • At the 13:01 mark, Wilkes was whistled for a five-minute major and a game misconduct going against the nation's leading scorer, Donald Flynn.
  • The Mustangs netted one goal on the major penalty, as Master netted his second of the game to give the visitors a, 3-2, lead going into the final period.

  • After back and forth play to begin the period, the Colonels went on the power play at the 5:56 mark but came up empty behind three saves from Kenny.
  • Nick Godfrey hit a pipe for Wilkes with just under six minutes left in the third.
  • Chad Watt had a pair of shots saved by Paterson-Jones with just under five minutes left.
  • Wilkes was on the power play for the final 1:55 of the game, and went up 6-4 after pulling Paterson-Jones with 1:30 to play.
  • Kenny came up with a pair of saves with just under a minute left and Stevenson withstood the pressure to force the mini-game.

  • Stevenson opened with a flurry of shots in front that were blocked by Colonel defenders.
  • Wilkes' Michael Gurska had the first shot on goal of the mini-game that was turned aside by Kenny just shy of three minutes in.
  • Gray had a shot from the left faceoff dot 4:19 in that was saved by Wilkes, followed by two more shots on target by Wilson and Lee that were also saved by Paterson-Jones.
  • Paterson-Jones made a pad save on a shot by Wilson just shy of the midway point of the period.
  • Colin Woods put a shot on Paterson-Jones from just in front of the crease with seven minutes on the clock, but Paterson-Jones came up with the save.
  • With just over three minutes on the clock, Ripley and Carl Lyden had back-to-back shots on target but again Paterson-Jones made two saves.
  • Both teams remained scoreless at the end of the 20-minute period, meaning the mini-game moved to sudden victory format.
  • In overtime, Aaron Murray ripped a shot off the opening faceoff that sailed high.
  • Kenny made a point-blank save on a two-man rush just over a minute in, then made another big save at the 2:54 mark.
  • On the ensuing faceoff, Tyler Barrow ripped a shot that snuck inside the right post to advance the Colonels.
  • Kenny finished with 17 saves, with Paterson-Jones stopping all 16 shots that he faced.

  • Stevenson was making its first-ever conference semifinal appearance.
  • Wilkes generated a 33-31 shot advantage in the first game.
  • Kenny finished with 29 saves, while Paterson-Jones had 30.
  • The Mustangs were 1-5 on the power play while Wilkes was 1-6.
  • Master recorded his third two-goal game of the season.  He also recorded a point in his fifth straight game.
  • Brenza recorded an assist in his fourth straight game.
