No. 11 Mustangs Open MAC Play With Sweep of Widener

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Five different players finished with at least five kills as the No. 11 Stevenson University men's volleyball team opened Middle Atlantic Conference play with a 3-0 win over Widener Saturday afternoon at Owings Mills Gymnasium.  Set scores were 25-21, 25-16, 25-14.

  • Stevenson (9-4, 1-0 MAC) jumped out to a 9-2 lead following a Logan Smiley service ace and a Widener (3-3, 0-2) error.
  • The Pride used a 9-4 run to pull within two, 13-11.
  • Leading 16-14, the Mustangs reeled off six straight points to build a 22-14 lead.
  • Kyle Bosko had a service ace and Nate Reynolds had a kill during the run.
  • Widener made another push and cut it to three, 23-20.
  • A service error by the Pride closed out the first set.

  • After four early ties, Stevenson rattled off five straight points to go up 9-5 on a Tanner Stauffer kill.
  • The Mustangs extended the lead to 13-7 on two kills by Smiley that sandwiched a Michael Dougherty service ace.
  • The hosts led by as many as 10 in the set and a kill by Jack Hrvatin closed things out.

  • Six straight points by the Mustangs capped by a Stauffer kill put the hosts up 9-3.
  • Stevenson extended its lead to eight, 16-8, on a Nathan Bosse kill.
  • Up 18-11, six straight points gave the hosts a commanding 24-11 lead after a Tyler Aiello kill.
  • Widener staved off match point twice, but a service error by the Pride closed things out.

  • Stevenson hit .256 for the match while holding the Pride to .027 hitting.
  • The Mustangs hit .354 over the final two sets.
  • Reynolds hit .462 and had a team-high eight kills and also had a pair of blocks.
  • Bosko hit .400 and had 10 kills and two blocks.
  • Stauffer and Smiley each recorded six kills, with Stauffer adding six digs and a pair of blocks.
  • Aleks Melbardis added five kills, eight assists and five digs.
  • Peyton Ranck recorded 21 assists and seven digs.
  • 14 different players saw the floor for Stevenson.
  • Stevenson extended its win streak at Owings Mills Gymnasium to 11 matches dating back to last season.

  • The Mustangs return to action Friday, February 21, traveling to Arcadia for an 8 pm rematch of last season's MAC final.
  • Stevenson is back at Owings Mills Gymnasium Friday, March 6, welcoming Cal Lutheran for a 6 pm non-conference matchup.
