No. 15 Mustangs Force Fifth Set With No. 12 Juniata, Split With Eagles and Hiram

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The No. 15 Stevenson University men's volleyball team split a pair of matches on day two of the Juniata Invitational Saturday at Memorial Gymnasium.  The Mustangs downed Hiram 3-1 in the opener.  In the nightcap, Stevenson rallied from 2-0 down against the host and 12th-ranked Eagles to force a fifth set before falling 3-2.

  • Set scores were 25-17, 22-25, 25-20, 25-19.
  • In the second set, the Mustangs (4-2) trailed 22-16 but rallied to within one, 23-22, before the Terriers (2-1) scored the final two points.
  • Stevenson trailed 12-10 in the third set before a 9-1 run capped by a Kyle Bosko service ace put the Mustangs up 19-13.
  • Hiram got within 21-19 before the Mustangs scored four of the final five points.
  • The Mustangs took control of the final set with an 8-2 run capped by a Logan Smiley kill that made it 21-14.
  • Stevenson hit .245 for the match while Hiram hit .168.
  • Smiley hit .464 and totaled 16 kills and also had four service aces.
  • Tanner Stauffer had 10 kills and five blocks.
  • Nate Reynolds added six kills and five blocks.
  • Peyton Ranck finished with 31 assists.

  • Set scores were 27-25, 25-21, 21-25, 22-25, 15-9.
  • In the first set, Stevenson led 24-23 after a Stauffer kill before Juniata (4-1) scored the last three points to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Eagles scored six straight points to take an early 6-2 lead in the second set.
  • After trailing by as many as six in the second, Stevenson got the lead down to 23-20, but got no closer.
  • Leading 17-16, the Mustangs scored four straight in the third to take a 21-16 lead on a kill by Smiley.
  • Kills by Reynolds and Stauffer closed out the third.
  • With the fourth set tied 11-11, the Mustangs used a 6-1 run to open up a 17-12 advantage.
  • The Eagles rallied to tie the set 21-21, but a Stauffer kill, followed by a block by Stauffer and Reynolds, put the visitors up 23-21.
  • A Stauffer kill closed out the fourth and forced the deciding set.
  • Juniata never trailed in the final frame, building an 8-5 lead at the changeover and maintaining at least a two-point cushion the rest of the way.
  • Smiley tallied 17 kills and seven digs.
  • Aleks Melbardis recorded 14 kills.
  • Stauffer notched 13 kills and nine digs, while Bosko finished with six blocks.
  • Ranck finished with 46 assists and seven digs.
  • Derek Tangorra racked up nine digs.
  • Juniata hit .315 for the match, while the Mustangs hit .237.

  • Stevenson had a season-high nine service aces in the Hiram match.
  • Melbardis' 14 kills in the nightcap were a career high.
  • Stauffer's 13 kills against the Eagles were also a career high.
  • Smiley was named to the All-Tournament team after totaling 45 kills in three matches.

  • Stevenson hosts Lancaster Bible next Friday, January 31, at 5 pm to open the Stevenson Invitational at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
