No 14 Mustangs Split With No. 1 New Paltz, Kean

UNION, N.J. - The 14th-ranked Stevenson men's volleyball dropped a tight four-set contest versus No. 1 SUNY New Paltz before rebounding with a straight set victory over Kean on day two of The Clash at Kean Saturday afternoon.

  • No. 1 SUNY New Paltz 3, No. 14 Stevenson 1: 24-26, 15-25, 26-24, 25-27
  • After going back and forth for the opening 10 points, the Hawks (1-0) scored four straight points before the Mustangs (2-1) responded with four of their own.
  • A service ace by sophomore Tanner Stauffer gave Stevenson a 21-17 lead but New Paltz won nine of the final 12 points to take the opening set.
  • Junior Logan Smiley started the second set with a kill to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead but that was as close as the team would get.
  • After falling behind 6-4, Stevenson won four consecutive points behind three straight service aces by Smiley.
  • The Mustangs rallied for a second time in the set, winning five of six points after trailing, 15-13.
  • In the fourth set, Stevenson trailed, 23-21, but rallied to tie the set at 23, 24, and 25, before the Hawks won the final two points.

  • After the Cougars (0-2) won five of six points to take a 9-8 lead, the Mustangs four consecutive points and seven of the next year to go ahead, 15-10.
  • In the second set, Stevenson jumped out to an 11-1 lead, winning four straight points on the serve of senior Kyle Bosko.
  • Late in the third set, Kean tied the game at 21-21, before the Mustangs won four of the final five points.

  • Smiley led the team in both matches, recording a combined 24 kills while adding 13 digs, six block assists, and four service aces.
  • Sophomore Peyton Ranck totaled 52 assists, 14 digs, one kill, and one service ace.
  • Senior Derek Tangorra finished with 15 digs, including 10 versus Kean, while junior Nate Reynolds had nine kills and 10 total blocks, including two solo.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Friday, January 24 when the Mustangs face Southern Virginia in the Juniata Invitational beginning at 5:00 p.m.
  • The Mustangs are home for the first time on Friday, January 31 when the team hosts Lancaster Bible at 5:00 p.m. in the Stevenson Inviational.
