Box Score UNION, N.J. - The No. 14 Stevenson University men's volleyball team opened its season with a 3-0 win over Penn State Altoona at The Clash at Kean Friday evening. Set scores were 25-16, 25-15, 25-14.
- The opening set saw eight ties in the first 16 points.
- Stevenson (1-0) used an 8-0 run to build a 14-8 lead. The run featured three block assists by Kyle Bosko and Aleks Melbardis.
- Penn State Altoona (0-1) stopped the run on a kill by Mirko Pandini.
- The Mustangs scored the next three points and took a 17-9 lead on a block by Bosko and Tanner Stauffer.
- A Stauffer kill closed out the set.
- Stevenson jumped out to a 3-0 lead.
- The Mustangs extended the lead to 10-4 after a kill by Logan Smiley, capping a 4-0 spurt.
- Stevenson continued to pull away, going up 20-8 on a Bosko kill.
- A service error by the Nittany Lions closed things out.
- With the set tied 3-3, the Mustangs took advantage of a service error and two attack errors to go up 6-3.
- After a PSU point, a service error and back-to-back kills by preseason All-American Nate Reynolds made it 9-4.
- After the Lions cut the lead to 11-9, Smiley came up with a kill and a service ace to make it 13-9.
- Penn State again cut the lead to two before the Mustangs responded with four straight points capped by a Reynolds kill that made it 17-11.
- Stevenson scored eight of the final 10 points to pull away for the sweep.
- Stevenson hit .262 for the match while holding Penn State Altoona to -.071 hitting.
- The Mustangs had 12 blocks and also took advantage of 14 service errors by the Nittany Lions.
- Stauffer led the Mustangs with eight kills, 10 digs and six block assists.
- Smiley totaled seven kills, while Reynolds hit .545 and had six kills and six block assists.
- Bosko and Melbardis finished with five and four block assists, respectively.
- Peyton Ranck handed out 16 assists
- Stevenson is in action twice at The Clash at Kean Saturday, taking on defending national champion and preseason No. 1 SUNY-New Paltz at 11 am and the host Cougars at 1:30 pm.
- The Mustangs' home opener comes Friday, January 31, as they take on Lancaster Bible at Owings Mills Gymnasium at 5 pm to open up the Stevenson Invitational.
